Is the recurrence rate high after single thyroidectomy?

Thyroid cancer is a malignant tumor that originates from the thyroid follicular epithelium or parafollicular cells. The recurrence rate of single thyroid cancer resection is not high, and the overall cure rate is high. Most patients can be cured in the early stages of the disease. If the disease is in the late stages, the cure rate is lower.

1. Papillary thyroid cancer: It is the most common thyroid cancer, accounting for about 10% of all thyroid cancers. In addition, there are medullary carcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, follicular carcinoma and undifferentiated carcinoma. Papillary thyroid cancer grows slowly and often manifests as cervical lymph node metastasis in the early stage. Surgery is the first choice for treatment. It can better prevent recurrence after surgery. Its 10-year cure rate is as high as 90%, and the recurrence rate is low.

2. Follicular thyroid cancer: It accounts for 10%-20% of thyroid cancer, followed by medullary carcinoma. The 10-year survival rate is 34%. 30% of patients will have lymph node metastasis. In the late stage of the disease, metastasis to the lungs, bones, liver and other parts will occur. At this time, comprehensive treatment should be carried out under the guidance of a doctor, including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, etc. The 10-year survival rate is about 50%, and the recurrence rate is relatively high.

3. Medullary thyroid cancer: It accounts for about 10% of thyroid cancers. This type of tumor grows slowly and mainly infiltrates along the lymphatic vessels. Sometimes it can break into the trachea or esophagus, but its metastasis is relatively rare. The 10-year survival rate is about 60%, and the recurrence rate is low.

4. Undifferentiated carcinoma: It is the most malignant thyroid cancer. It develops relatively quickly and may metastasize to the lungs, bones, liver and other parts in the late stage of the disease. At this time, comprehensive treatment should be carried out under the guidance of a doctor, including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, etc. The 10-year survival rate is about 20%, and the recurrence rate is relatively high.

In addition, the patient's compliance, mood, and physical condition are also related to the cure rate of the disease. Patients should pay attention to regular diet, avoid overwork, maintain a good attitude, and actively cooperate with doctors for treatment.
