Do I still need to take medicine after half of my thyroid cancer is removed?

After hemisection surgery, patients with thyroid cancer usually need to take medication to promote wound healing, prevent hypothyroidism, and prevent recurrence of thyroid cancer. Generally, adjustments are required in the following aspects:

1. Postoperative use: After hemisection of thyroid cancer patients, metastasis may occur, resulting in poor surgical results. Therefore, it is necessary to take levothyroxine sodium tablets, which is beneficial for supplementing thyroid hormones, inhibiting the growth of tumor cells, and promoting wound healing.

2. Suppress hypothyroidism: After hemisection surgery, patients with thyroid cancer may suffer from hypothyroidism, so they need to take medication, such as levothyroxine sodium tablets, to supplement thyroid hormones, usually starting with a small dose and gradually increasing;

3. Preventing the recurrence of thyroid cancer: After hemisection, patients with thyroid cancer need to pay attention to regular review of thyroid function and thyroid ultrasound to understand the changes in the condition. If recurrence occurs, they need to continue taking medication. At the same time, it is also necessary to observe whether there are metastatic lymph nodes around. If there are many metastatic lymph nodes, radiotherapy and chemotherapy should also be considered;

4. Other situations: After hemisection, patients with thyroid cancer need to pay attention to whether there is subcutaneous effusion, skin flap necrosis, etc. If subcutaneous effusion occurs, puncture drainage is required. If skin flap necrosis occurs, skin flap necrosis repair surgery may be required.

Patients should also take adequate rest, avoid fatigue, quit smoking and drinking, and avoid spicy food in their daily lives. They should also exercise properly, maintain a good attitude, and regularly check their thyroid function and color Doppler ultrasound.
