What are the sequelae of pituitary tumor surgery? Don’t panic if these 5 things happen

Pituitary tumors are tumors that occur in the brain. They are caused by residual epithelial cells. They are divided into multiple types and have a certain possibility of becoming cancerous. There are two main treatments for pituitary tumors: surgery and medication. After surgery, patients may experience sequelae such as diabetes insipidus, sphenoid sinusitis, and cerebrospinal fluid leakage. In addition, since each patient's condition is different, there may be multiple problems after surgery, such as worsening visual impairment and damage to the central nervous system.

Pituitary tumor is a common intracranial tumor in my country. It is a tumor that occurs in epithelial residual cells. According to different standards, it can be divided into pituitary adenoma, pituicytoma, pituitary adenocarcinoma and pituitary metastatic carcinoma. Among them, pituitary adenoma is one of the most common intracranial tumors. Factors involved in the pathogenesis of pituitary tumors include: genetics, hypothalamic lesions, oncogene activation, loss of tumor suppressor genes, environmental factors, etc. Treatments for pituitary tumors include: surgery, drug therapy, radiotherapy, etc. So what are the sequelae after pituitary tumor surgery?
① Diabetes insipidus may occur after pituitary tumor surgery (generally, a 24-hour urine volume of more than 4000 ml is considered diabetes insipidus, which is caused by a decrease in antidiuretic hormone secretion by the pituitary gland and a decrease in urine concentration).
② Sphenoid sinusitis (may manifest as pain, accompanied by fever and other symptoms. Once infection and suppuration occur, active treatment is required).
③ Water and electrolyte disorders (because the antidiuretic hormone and other hormones secreted by the pituitary gland affect kidney function, leading to abnormal water and sodium metabolism, severe cases can cause arrhythmia and ultimately lead to sudden death).
④ Cerebrospinal fluid leakage (manifested as transparent liquid in the nasal cavity, which may be accompanied by headache). In addition, on the 4th to 8th day after pituitary tumor surgery, patients may experience low fever, weakness, headache, nausea, vomiting, and in severe cases, mental deterioration. Nasal secretions. Generally, within a few months after pituitary tumor surgery, patients will often have nasal congestion, nasal bleeding or cool liquid. You must believe in yourself in your daily life.
⑤ Worsening of visual impairment (the compression of the optic chiasm is relieved after pituitary tumor surgery, but the necrosis caused by long-term compression cannot be repaired), damage to the central nervous system (surgery can cause nerve damage), etc.
Therefore, in the treatment of pituitary tumors, we must strictly combine the patient's condition, actively communicate with the patient's family, and explain the possible sequelae. The patient himself also has the right to know the postoperative sequelae and actively treat according to the patient's wishes and condition.
