My teeth hurt when I run

Running is an exercise that many people like. It is also a form of exercise that can strengthen the body and improve physical fitness. However, many people will experience some discomfort when running. For example, toothache is a common problem that occurs during running. So, why do you have toothache when running? This will be introduced below!

1. Temperature difference changes and the dental nerve is stimulated

After running, our body's blood circulation will speed up, and the overall temperature of the human body will become higher, which is generally higher than the ambient temperature. In this way, the cold air outside will stimulate our dental nerves, causing toothache after exercise.

Especially people with some dental diseases, such as periodontitis, tooth decay, tooth sensitivity and so on. Such teeth are not healthy enough. If the air changes between hot and cold during running, the teeth will be more susceptible to the stimulation of external hot and cold changes, aggravating the toothache.

If you have toothache after running, try not to open your mouth wide while running. It is best to use the nose-in-nose-out method or the nose-in-out method. This can slow down the speed and area of air entering the mouth, and heat the air to protect the teeth.

2. Increased blood circulation, compression of the dental nerve causing pain

During exercise, blood circulation intensifies, the pulp cavity becomes congested, the pressure in the pulp cavity increases, and the dental nerves are compressed, causing pain. This is actually the same reason why patients with hypertension experience toothaches. Especially in winter, when the body undergoes some overloaded exercise, it is very likely to cause toothache symptoms. The nerves in the pulp cavity are sensitive to increased blood pressure, so discomfort may occur in the posterior molar area.

In addition, nerve reactions are stronger at night, so people who are used to running at night will have more severe toothaches. In addition, the position of the head when sleeping at night is lower than when sitting or standing, which increases the blood circulation in the head, and increases the congestion and pressure in the pulp cavity, further compressing the nerves and causing toothache.

3. The patient has hidden dental disease

If some runners have hidden dental diseases, such as gingivitis, periodontitis, apical periodontitis, pulpitis, caries, tooth sensitivity and so on. Such teeth are not in good health in themselves. If the air alternates between hot and cold during running, the teeth will be more easily stimulated by the changes in temperature from the outside world, aggravating the toothache.
