Exercise methods for prostate cancer. Researchers from a certain country reported that a study has shown that exercise can benefit cancer patients. Their research aims to study the impact of physical exercise on the prognosis of prostate cancer. The results show that exercise can reduce the all-cause mortality rate and mortality caused by cancer itself in prostate cancer patients. A medical school said in an interview that previous studies have shown that exercise has many health benefits, and now their research has shown that exercise can improve the survival of prostate cancer patients. Because the intensity of exercise can be modified by an individual, men diagnosed with prostate cancer may be able to improve their survival through exercise, regardless of whether they exercised before their cancer diagnosis, she said. The researchers collected data from 4623 patients in the National Prostate Cancer Registry of the National Follow-up Study, a nationwide cohort study that included men with localized prostate cancer who were still alive since 2007. The men were diagnosed with localized prostate cancer between 1997 and 2002 and followed until 2012. The average age at diagnosis was 63.1 years, and most had a body mass index between 25kg/m2 and 30kg/m2. The men were asked how much time they spent walking or cycling, exercising, or doing housework each day after their prostate cancer diagnosis. The metabolic equivalents (METs) of each activity were then assessed. The MET value refers to the ratio of energy consumption during activity to basic energy consumption at rest. For example, a MET value of 1 during sitting still means that the exercise does not increase energy consumption compared to basic energy consumption, and a MET value of 2 means that energy consumption has increased by 2 times. The higher the MET value of an exercise, the more energy it consumes. During the follow-up period, 561 patients died, including 194 deaths due to prostate cancer. Research data show that compared with prostate cancer patients who walk or ride less than 20 minutes a day, patients who walk or ride 20 minutes or more a day have a 30% lower overall mortality rate and a 39% lower prostate cancer-specific mortality rate. Compared with patients who exercised for more than 1 hour, those who exercised for more than 1 hour had a 26% lower overall mortality rate and a 32% lower prostate cancer-specific mortality rate. The total time spent walking, cycling, exercising and doing housework was then calculated. The researchers found that patients with a total MET of 5 hours or more per day had a 37% lower overall mortality rate and a 22% lower prostate cancer-specific mortality rate than those with less than 5 hours. The researchers said they recommend that doctors advise their patients to be more active, start with their own activities, and maintain their best possible exercise status. Prostate cancer patients should find an exercise program that interests them and keep in mind that movement is better than inactivity and that exercise may improve their health. |
