There is an optimal method for cervical cancer screening

The results of screening for cervical cancer using the human papillomavirus (HPV) test are significantly better than any other screening method currently used in cervical cancer screening. This is the conclusion reached by researchers from China and the United States after a comparative study of "cervical cancer diagnosis methods".

In June 1999, the Epidemiology Department of Cancer Hospital and Cancer Institute of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences collaborated with the Cleveland Clinic in the United States to conduct cervical staining observation, cervical exfoliated cell examination, colposcopy, fluorescence detection, and the internationally advanced hybrid capture second-generation method, as well as HPV testing in 1,997 married women aged 35 to 45 in Xiangyuan County, Shanxi Province, a high-incidence area of ​​cervical cancer in China. The clinical significance of the above-mentioned examination methods was evaluated based on the pathological results.

The evaluation results show that the HPV positive detection rate is significantly better than other examination methods in screening high-risk groups for cervical cancer. The HPV test results suggest that people with normal cervix but HPV positive, or HPV positive intraepithelial neoplasia, should be listed as potential risk groups for cervical cancer.

HPV testing is easy to obtain. The person being tested only needs to collect vaginal secretions for testing. This method has a high positive detection rate and is beneficial for the early prevention and treatment of cervical cancer.
