Postoperative care knowledge for prostate cancer

Prostate cancer surgery is a major operation, and it takes a certain amount of time to recover after the operation. There is a lot of bleeding during the operation, and the recovery time after the operation may be longer. Therefore, nutrition should be appropriately increased after the operation. If there is long-term urinary incontinence, hematuria, or difficulty urinating, or the urine stream becomes thinner, or the urine is not completely discharged, you should go to the hospital for a follow-up visit in time. If you still have sexual function after the operation, you should also abstain from sex for 3 months. PSA should be checked every six months to detect the recurrence of prostate cancer. The following experts explain some issues that need to be paid attention to after prostate cancer surgery.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors of the male urogenital system. Early diagnosis and surgical treatment are currently the preferred methods for treating prostate cancer. The following three complications may occur after surgery, so postoperative care should be done well:

1. Care of urinary incontinence after surgery

Postoperative urinary incontinence is caused by damage or stretching of the urethral sphincter, which may result in permanent or temporary urinary incontinence. Patients cannot control urination, which seriously affects their quality of daily life. Long-term urinary incontinence is prone to secondary urinary tract and perineal skin infections.

Therefore, patients who experience temporary urinary incontinence after catheter removal should be fully prepared mentally. To cooperate with the continued treatment after surgery, patients who have recovered from surgery can be asked to talk about their personal experiences, overcome the tension and anxiety of patients after surgery, and build their confidence in treatment.

Instruct the patient to perform pelvic floor muscle exercises, that is, lying flat on the bed to reduce abdominal pressure, increase urethral closure pressure, and contract the anus at the same time.

2. Nursing of urethral anastomotic stenosis

If the urine stream becomes progressively thinner and urination becomes difficult, urethral anastomotic stenosis should be considered.

The symptoms can be relieved by urethral dilation. Before dilation, explain to the patient the method, necessity, possible complications and pain caused by urethral dilation. At the same time, ensure the cleanliness of the urethral opening to avoid the occurrence of complications.

3. Nursing of erectile dysfunction after surgery

Surgery may damage the bilateral vascular nerve bundles of the penis, resulting in erectile dysfunction

Nurses should listen to patients who express distress and inferiority about loss of sexual ability with a sincere attitude and provide effective psychological counseling.
