The researchers looked at 4,400 patients who were first diagnosed with melanoma at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center between 1996 and 2002. The average age of the patients when they learned of their disease was 55.
Nine percent of the patients, or 385 people, had multiple melanomas. They were more likely to have a family history of the disease or to have dysplastic moles, which can develop into precancerous lesions. The researchers note that dysplastic moles occur in about 7 percent of the general population.
