What to do if you have choking cough after laryngeal cancer surgery

Food is the material basis for the patient's recovery. Laryngeal cancer patients are relatively weak after surgery and need to take some nutritious soups. However, patients often choke when eating these thinner foods, which will affect the body's recovery after surgery.

Laryngeal cancer patients often experience choking when swallowing food. This is because the food they eat and the air they exhale pass through the larynx and then enter the esophagus and trachea respectively. Due to surgical factors, food can easily enter the trachea and cause choking.

Many laryngeal cancer patients are afraid to eat after surgery because they are afraid of choking when swallowing food. In fact, the best way to reduce the choking phenomenon of patients is to do proper swallowing movements. It is best to start practicing about half a month after surgery, and you can choose some dry foods, such as steamed buns and bread. This type of food can form a ball of chyme after chewing and enter the esophagus smoothly, which avoids choking due to accidental entry into the trachea. Slowly, patients can eat semi-dry foods in moderation, such as noodles. Finally, drinking some soup, porridge, water, etc. is no problem.

Some patients bend over when swallowing food, and their choking cough will be relieved; some people will feel better if they lean to the left; some people will feel better if they turn to the right. Therefore, laryngeal cancer patients may also try to change their eating posture, which may avoid choking cough.

A small number of patients cannot avoid choking even if they insist on swallowing exercises. In this case, surgical treatment is required, but there is a possibility of loss of language function.
