Why does my left eye keep twitching

In daily life, people often encounter the situation of left eye twitching. Many people are superstitious about some ancient feudal sayings, that is, the left eye twitching means good fortune, while the right eye twitching means disaster. Therefore, many people think that left eye twitching is a good thing and believe that it will bring good luck. In fact, this is very dangerous. The left eye twitching is because there is something wrong with the body. People should find the cause and treat it in time. So, why does my left eye keep twitching?

Left eye twitching may also be related to eye muscle spasm. Eye muscle spasm refers to the involuntary twitching of the muscles around the eye. In most cases, the common causes of eyelid twitching are excessive eye use or fatigue, and excessive mental tension, such as operating the computer for too long, using the eyes for too long, and excessive mental stress before exams. In addition, refractive errors, myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism can also cause eyelid twitching. These symptoms are mainly manifestations of irritation of nerve endings, so the symptoms are often limited to one side of the upper or lower eyelid. You can recover by relieving stress and getting adequate rest.

These causes act primarily on the peripheral nerve endings, so the symptoms are often limited to twitching of the upper or lower eyelid on one side. However, when eyelid twitching gradually develops into complete blepharospasm or hemifacial spasm, it indicates that the main branch or trunk of the facial nerve is irritated, and the lesion site that is the cause is inside the skull or at the starting point of the facial nerve after it exits the skull. The most common cause is compression and stimulation of the facial nerve root by abnormal blood vessels running inside the skull, which accounts for 99% of hemifacial spasm. Another 1% is stimulation of the facial nerve by intracranial tumors or arachnoid adhesions.

Most eyelid twitching caused by eye muscle fatigue, mental tension, etc. can be recovered by relieving stress and getting proper rest. If eyelid twitching is caused by refractive error, it can usually be relieved by vision correction. If you have eye problems, they can be cured by an ophthalmologist. If eyelid twitching gradually worsens and leads to blepharospasm or hemifacial spasm, the main cause is within the skull, and treatment by a neurosurgeon is required.
