Examination of the affected ear reveals single or multiple small boils in the external auditory canal, which appear as localized redness, swelling and bulges. The pain is significantly aggravated when the auricle is pulled or the tragus is pressed, which can be distinguished from the ear pain in acute otitis media (there is no pain when the auricle is pulled in acute otitis media). When the furuncle matures, the raised area becomes soft or pus head appears. After the furuncle ruptures, a small amount of pus and blood will flow out of the external auditory canal, and the ear pain will be relieved.

(1) In the early stages of the disease or when the furuncle is immature, positive and negative pressure cleaning therapy can be used. After cleaning the external auditory canal, apply ichthyol ointment to the affected area 1 to 2 times a day.

(2) If the boil ruptures on its own, use a cotton swab to wipe out the pus and then use iodine to clean the external auditory canal.

(3) If the patient has fever and general discomfort, antibiotics can be given. Based on TCM diagnosis, oral Chinese medicine for clearing away heat, detoxifying, reducing swelling and relieving pain is given.
