What should I do if I have some blood in my stool before a colonoscopy?

Some people need to go to the hospital for a colonoscopy because of intestinal diseases, but there may be a small amount of blood in the stool before the colonoscopy. This will not affect the colonoscopy. Just try not to eat too hard food before the colonoscopy, ensure liquid food for the day, and do not eat the meal before the examination. There will be no problem as long as you are on an empty stomach.

Preparation for the inspection

Intestinal cleanliness is one of the key factors in the success or failure of colonoscopy. If there is still a lot of feces in the intestines during the examination, it will affect the insertion of the endoscope and observation, and may even make it impossible to complete the full colon examination. Therefore, it is very important to clean and prepare the intestines before examination. Oral diarrhea medicine is one of the most commonly used, reliable and safe methods in clinical practice. Since the vast majority of outpatients perform bowel preparation at home, how to perform safe and effective bowel preparation at home is an issue of great concern to patients and their families.

Colon cleansing method

one

(1) Eat liquid food (no residue, no dairy products) the day before colonoscopy, and do not eat breakfast on the day of the examination.

(2) Time to take Shutaiqing: Patients who are examined in the morning should take it 5 hours before the examination, and patients who are examined in the afternoon should take it at 6 am.

(3) Dissolve 6 bags of Shutaiqing A and 6 bags of Shutaiqing B in 750 ml of warm water. Take 750 ml every 30 minutes, for a total of 3000 ml. Finish within 2 hours.

(4) During medication, the patient is advised to walk around and gently massage the abdomen to speed up excretion.

(5) Observation endpoint: clear watery stool.

(6) Strictly fast after bowel cleansing.

two

(1) Eat a semi-liquid low-residue meal, such as porridge, for dinner the day before the examination. Do not eat vegetables or fruits with seeds, such as watermelon.

(2) About 4 hours before the examination, take 50 grams of magnesium sulfate powder (for adults) and 25-35 grams (for children) mixed with 100 milliliters of warm water orally. Then take 2000-2500 milliliters of warm water orally within 1 hour.

(3) Generally, bowel movements will begin after about half an hour, and 5 to 7 bowel movements can basically clear the feces in the large intestine.

(4) Some patients may experience vomiting during the bowel preparation process, which may be related to the stimulation of magnesium sulfate and drinking a large amount of water in a short period of time. Magnesium sulfate can be mixed into beverages and taken orally, and then boiled water can be taken slowly until there is no obvious abdominal distension.

(5) If you still have not defecated 4 hours after drinking water, it is ineffective and you should go to the hospital for a cleansing enema.

If any of the following symptoms persist for two weeks or more, you should go to the hospital for a check-up; ① Changes in bowel habits: frequent diarrhea or constipation; stool shape has changed or become thinner than before; ② Bloody stools with mucus: stools often contain bright red or dark red blood and mucus; ③ Tenesmus: always feeling that the stool is not completely discharged, but unable to defecate; ④ Persistent abdominal pain; the pain is mostly in the middle and lower abdomen, with varying degrees of severity, mostly dull pain or bloating; ⑤ Anemia is often accompanied by fatigue and unexplained weight loss.

Note:

1. There are many methods for intestinal cleaning, and each hospital is different. Intestinal preparation should be performed according to the doctor's instructions (especially for those undergoing painful enteroscopy).

2. Eat a light diet three days before the examination. Do not eat fiber-rich fruits and vegetables the day before, and fast on the day of the examination.

3. If the discharge after taking the medicine contains feces or fecal fluid, you should inform the colonoscopy medical staff in time for further intestinal treatment.

4. Before the examination, listen carefully to the doctor’s introduction to the examination process and eliminate any concerns.

5. Colonoscopy involves certain risks. For your safety, people over 60 years old should undergo an electrocardiogram.

6. If you have obvious abdominal pain, bloating, dizziness, etc. after the intestinal examination, you should tell your doctor in time for further treatment.
