Symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis

Symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis

Eyes are the windows to the soul. Through eyes, we can see the different beauty of the world. Eyes are an important organ of the human body. Although they are small, they can also get sick. In addition to myopia, eye inflammation is also a common disease. In medicine, eye inflammation is usually called conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis is divided into two types: bacterial and fungal. What are the symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis?

Bacterial conjunctivitis is a common infectious eye disease, accounting for approximately 5% of all conjunctivitis cases. This disorder should be suspected when a patient has conjunctival inflammation and purulent exudate. Bacterial conjunctivitis, caused by virulent bacteria such as gonococci, can be vision-threatening. Clinically, the disease can be divided into chronic (several days to several weeks), acute or subacute (several hours to several days), and hyperacute (within 24 hours) according to the speed of onset; and can be divided into mild, moderate, and severe according to the severity of the disease.

Causes

Modern medicine believes that the bacteria that usually cause chronic bacterial conjunctivitis include: Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas; the bacteria that usually cause acute or subacute conjunctivitis include: Koch-Week bacillus, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus; the bacteria that cause hyperacute conjunctivitis include: Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis.

Clinical manifestations

Bacterial conjunctivitis is a relatively common eye disease, which is somewhat infectious and often occurs in spring and autumn. The main clinical features are rapid onset, most of which occur in both eyes. The affected eyes have varying degrees of foreign body sensation, burning sensation, itching, mucopurulent secretions, conjunctival congestion, increased conjunctival sac secretions, tearing, swollen eyelids, etc.

treat

In the early and peak stages of the disease, secretion smears or conjunctival scrapings should be performed to identify the pathogenic bacteria, and drug sensitivity tests should be performed to select effective drug treatment.

For patients with excessive secretions, the conjunctival sac can be flushed with 3% boric acid solution or normal saline. If the secretions are not much, a sterilized cotton swab dipped in the above solution can be used to clean the eyes.

When concurrent keratitis occurs, it should be treated as keratitis. Treatment should be timely and thorough to prevent recurrence.
