I feel my eyeballs are swollen, what's going on?

When you feel your eyeballs are swollen, you should consider several factors. Overuse of your eyes, frequent phone use, and using the computer for too long can cause this feeling. You can try using some eye drops to relieve it. In addition, corneal lesions, neuralgia above, and glaucoma problems are all causes of eye swelling in patients.

1. Keratoconjunctival lesions

When the cornea and conjunctiva are inflamed due to microbial infection or stimulation by physical and chemical factors, there will often be stinging and aching pain in the eyes. In the acute phase, it is often accompanied by red eyes, eye mucus, and increased tears. In this case, only the inflammation or concurrent tarsal calculi need to be treated.

2. Visual fatigue

It is common among people who work in close proximity for a long time, such as students, editors, etc. Eye pain usually presents as soreness, difficulty opening the eyes, and easy tearing, and often gets better with rest.

3. Supraorbital neuralgia

Because the supraorbital nerve innervates the upper orbit and the surrounding skin, eye pain is often a stabbing pain in the orbit and its surroundings, and some people may also experience pain in the eyeball. Acupuncture and physical therapy can help relieve this type of neuralgia.

4. Glaucoma

When acute congestive glaucoma occurs, intraocular pressure can rise to over 70 mmHg, causing severe eye pain and headache, accompanied by red eyes, decreased vision, nausea, and vomiting.

Many patients often first visit the internal medicine or neurology department, which leads to delays in the treatment of their condition. In this case, you need to go to the ophthalmology department for emergency treatment, use medication to lower intraocular pressure, improve water circulation in the eye, and save visual function. Emergency surgery is required if necessary.

Kind reminder: Another situation is chronic increase in intraocular pressure, which is often mild eye swelling and soreness. As time goes by, the eyeball gradually adapts to the increased intraocular pressure, and discomfort such as eye swelling will disappear on its own.

This often leads to delayed diagnosis, and by the time vision is significantly reduced and patients seek medical attention, the disease is often already in the late stage. This requires vigilance, especially for people with high risk factors for glaucoma, such as family members with glaucoma, high myopia, diabetes, central retinal vein occlusion, etc.
