Symptoms of ear sores

The symptoms of ear infection are diffuse redness, swelling and ulcers in the patient's ear canal, and are characterized by diffuse redness, swelling, ulcers, and exudation in the external auditory canal. It is equivalent to diffuse otitis externa in Western medicine.

Causes of ear sores and wind in traditional Chinese medicine

1. Wind, heat and dampness attack the ears

It is mostly caused by damaging the skin of the external auditory canal while picking the ears, which allows wind, heat and dampness to invade the ear. It is also caused by unclean ear canal, dirty water entering the ear, or pus in the ear, which turns into heat. Wind, heat and dampness invade the ear and fight with qi and blood, causing ear sores.

2. Damp-heat in the liver and gallbladder attacks the ears

The accumulation of damp-heat evil toxins can trigger the heat in the liver and gallbladder, which can then go up the meridians to invade the ear orifices, steaming and burning the ear canals, blocking the meridians, and going against the skin to cause ear sores.

3. Blood deficiency and dryness, itching of the ears

If the illness does not heal for a long time, the yin blood will be damaged, the blood deficiency will turn into dryness, and the ear orifices and skin will not be nourished, which will cause illness.

Treatment

Internal treatment

(1) Wind, heat and dampness attack the ears

Symptoms: ear pain, itching, burning sensation in the ear canal, accompanied by headache, fever, and chills. The tongue is red, the tongue coating is thin yellow, and the pulse is floating and rapid. Examination may reveal tenderness over the tragus, pulling pain over the auricle, diffuse redness and swelling of the external auditory canal, or moisture in the ear canal with a small amount of exudate.

Treatment method: Dispel wind and heat, detoxify and remove dampness.

Prescription: Modified Yinhua Jiedu Decoction.

Commonly used medicines: honeysuckle, forsythia, plantain, coptis, selfheal, moutan bark, rhinoceros horn, and poria.

(ii) Damp-heat in the liver and gallbladder attacks the ears

Symptoms: ear pain, headache traction on the same side, bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, and may be accompanied by fever. The tongue is red, the tongue coating is yellow and greasy, and the pulse is stringy and rapid. Examination revealed tenderness over the tragus, pulling pain over the auricle, diffuse redness, swelling and erosion of the external auditory canal, and exudation of yellow sebum.

Treatment method: Clear the liver and gallbladder, promote dampness and reduce swelling.

Prescription: Longdan Xiegan Decoction with modifications.

Commonly used medicines: Gentiana, Gardenia, Scutellaria, Alisma, Plantago, Angelica, Bupleurum, Rehmannia, and Licorice.

(III) Blood deficiency leads to dryness, and itching of the ears

Symptoms: The course of the disease is long, with repeated attacks of ear itching and ear pain, and no obvious systemic symptoms. The tongue is pale, the tongue coating is white, and the pulse is thin and rapid. Examination revealed that the skin of the external auditory canal was flushed, thickened, and cracked, with crusts visible on the surface.

Treatment method: Nourish blood and moisten dryness.

Prescription: Modified Rehmannia Decoction.

Commonly used medicines: raw rehmannia, cooked rehmannia, Polygonum multiflorum, angelica, moutan bark, Scrophularia ningpoensis, Tribulus terrestris, Bombyx batryticatus, safflower, and licorice.

External treatment

1. External application: You can apply it topically with Coptis chinensis ointment, Zijin tablets, etc.

2. Ear drops: You can use traditional Chinese medicine for clearing heat and detoxifying to make ear drops.

Acupuncture treatment

For severe ear pain, acupuncture can be used on the Hegu, Neiguan, Shaoshang and other acupoints to dredge the meridians, drain heat and relieve pain.
