What to do if you drink water during abdominal ultrasound

What to do if you drink water during abdominal ultrasound

There are many diseases that need to be diagnosed through color ultrasound examination. For example, cardiac color ultrasound can detect many heart diseases, and vaginal or pelvic color ultrasound can detect various gynecological diseases. Abdominal color ultrasound is a relatively common type of color ultrasound. Some abdominal color ultrasounds require the patient to drink enough water before the examination. For example, a rectal examination requires the patient's bladder to be full, but some abdominal color ultrasounds require the patient to be on an empty stomach and not drink water.

1. Precautions for B-ultrasound examination

1. Heart: When undergoing a cardiac ultrasound examination, you should rest for a while, take off your shoes, lie flat on the examination bed, unbutton your shirt, expose your chest, and let the doctor examine it.

2. Gallbladder and pancreas: When undergoing a gallbladder ultrasound examination, you should eat less greasy food the day before and should not eat again 8 hours before the examination (i.e. after dinner the day before the examination). If the gallbladder does not show signs of needing re-examination, fatty foods must be avoided for 24-48 hours. If the patient is also going to undergo gastrointestinal or gallbladder X-rays at the same time, ultrasound examination should be scheduled before them, or three days after the gastrointestinal barium meal and two days after cholangiography. Preparation for the pancreas is the same as for the gallbladder.

3. Spleen: No special preparation is required for simple examination of the spleen, but the spleen will shift backward and upward after a full meal, affecting the imaging, so it is better to examine the spleen on an empty stomach.

4. Gastrointestinal: For gastrointestinal and other upper gastrointestinal tract examinations, you should eat easily digestible food the night before and do not eat or drink anything on the morning of the examination. If the patient needs to undergo gastrointestinal X-ray or fiberendoscopy at the same time, ultrasound examination should be arranged before them, or 2-3 days after them to avoid interference with barium and gas. During a rectal examination, the patient must keep his bladder full, so he should not urinate 2-3 hours before the examination. Before a colon examination, you should make sure you empty your bowels.

5. Liver and kidneys: Generally, no special preparation is required before the examination, but it is best to do it on an empty stomach.

2. Precautions for gynecological pelvic B-ultrasound examination

1. Your lower abdomen needs to be exposed during the examination, so it is best to wear pants or a skirt to make it easier to take off your clothes.

2. You need to drink about 1000 ml of water half an hour to one hour before the examination, and hold your urine as long as possible. Because only when the bladder is full to a certain extent can the uterus be squeezed from the deep pelvic cavity to the lower abdomen, and the uterus and ovaries can be observed by B-ultrasound. So it is best to carry a water bottle with you to refill it in time.

3. Gynecological vaginal B-ultrasound

This method does not require holding urine, and because it is close to the uterus and ovaries, the image is clear and has high resolution, so the examination results are more accurate. This method is not suitable for people who have bleeding, such as menstruation or irregular vaginal bleeding; it is also not suitable for people with infectious diseases, such as vaginitis, sexually transmitted diseases, other cervical diseases, vaginal diseases and some vulvar diseases, in order to prevent infection, cross-infection and bleeding and other adverse consequences. If you have a disease that is not suitable for transvaginal ultrasound, you should remind your doctor in time and avoid transvaginal ultrasound.
