Everyone knows that beer has a very low alcohol content and can also play a good role in summer heat relief. Beer contains a lot of carbon dioxide and nutrients, such as amino acids, vitamins, and inorganic salts. These nutrients are easily absorbed by the body and will generate heat energy in the human body after absorption. It is called liquid bread by many people. Brewing beer also requires technology, so what is beer made of? First, what is beer made of? Beer has four main ingredients: barley, water, hops and yeast. Each ingredient has many complex properties. Barley is the seed of a cereal grain that is very similar in appearance to wheat. Before you can make beer from barley, it must be allowed to germinate, a natural process. First, conditions must be created for the barley to germinate. Just soak the barley in water for a few days, drain the water, and keep it at 15.5 degrees Celsius for five days, and it will germinate. Under these conditions, the barley seed coat will crack and begin to sprout. The barley at this time is called green malt. Like all seeds, barley contains nutrients that sustain the seed until it can produce its own nutrients through photosynthesis. During the germination process, enzymes released by the barley convert these starch nutrients into sugars, which sustain the growth of the malt. The key to the germination process is to stop the germination of the barley when sugar invertase has just appeared but most of the starch has not yet been converted. Ultimately these enzymes generate sugars that the yeast uses to form the alcohol in beer. As this natural process releases enzymes, the temperature is gradually raised to dry the green malt. The intensity of the malt flavor and color depends on the temperature during the drying process. The final processing step is to remove the small rhizomes that grow during the germination process, and then the malt is ready for brewing. Most breweries buy barley that has already been malted and meets their specifications. Second, the hops used to brew beer are the flowers of the hop vine, which belongs to the genus Cannabis (Cannabaceae). Hops are a close relative of another cannabis plant you may have heard of, marijuana, but unlike marijuana, hops do not produce a psychoactive effect. Hops contain acids, which give beer a bitter taste, and oils, which give beer some flavor and aroma. Adding hops to beer also inhibits the formation of certain bacteria that can cause the beer to go bad. There are many different types of hops, and adding different hops to beer will create different flavors, aromas, and bitterness. In the United States, hops are primarily grown in Washington State. Hops are also grown in Germany, southern England and Australia. What is beer made of? Yeast is a single-celled microorganism that produces the alcohol and carbon dioxide in beer. There are also many different types of yeast used to make beer. Just as yeast in fermented dough (starter) is used to develop the characteristic flavor of fermented bread, using different yeasts in beer will also bring different flavors to the beer. |
