How is dental fluorosis formed

Many people may not know much about dental fluorosis. It is a common dental disease. There are many causes of this disease, which may be related to the region. The water quality in some areas is special and rich in fluoride. People may get dental fluorosis if they drink the water for a long time. It may also be related to the food you eat. Food rich in fluoride can also cause dental fluorosis. Dental fluorosis is generally prevented.

Dental fluorosis, also known as fluorosis or mottled enamel, is a regional disease and a typical endemic disease. It is the most common and prominent symptom in the early stages of chronic fluorosis. Fluoride mainly damages the ameloblasts of the tooth germ during the enamel development stage. Therefore, dental fluorosis can only occur if excessive fluoride enters the body during the mineralization stage of tooth development. Well, for patients who don't know much about dental fluorosis, they must want to get to the bottom of it. So what is the cause of dental fluorosis?

Causes of dental fluorosis:

1. In areas with high fluoride content in drinking water, drinking water is the largest source of fluoride intake. Fluoride intake from drinking water is determined by: 1. a person's age; 2. climate conditions; and 3. dietary habits. The optimum concentration of fluoride in water depends mainly on the local annual average maximum temperature, which is 0.7-1.2 ppm in the United States and about 0.7 ppm in Guangzhou. my country has a vast territory and the temperature difference between the north and the south is huge, so there cannot be only one suitable concentration. Therefore, the current fluoride concentration in my country's water quality standard of 0.5 to 1 ppm should be appropriate.

2. The absorption of fluoride in food depends on the solubility of inorganic fluoride in food and the calcium content. If calcium compounds are added, the absorption of fluoride is significantly reduced. Animal experiments have confirmed that sufficient vitamins A and D and appropriate amounts of calcium and phosphorus can reduce the damage caused by fluoride to the body. This shows that excessive fluoride content is not the only cause of dental fluorosis, because not everyone in areas with slightly higher fluoride content in water suffers from fluorosis.

3. Although using fluoride toothpaste can effectively prevent and treat tooth decay, it also has side effects. If used improperly, it can easily lead to dental fluorosis.

4. There is a very small boundary between the anti-caries effect of fluoride and its toxicity. Excessive intake of fluoride will cause spots on the teeth, which is called dental fluorosis. In severe cases, teeth may turn yellow, become rough and prone to chipping.

The hazards of dental fluorosis: Dental fluorosis causes the surface of teeth to turn yellow or brown, and pit-like defects to appear, seriously affecting health and appearance, and causing psychological burden and harm to patients. Dental fluorosis is an abnormal development of tooth structure, which is resistant to acid but not to wear. It leads to severe tooth wear, manifested as loss of tooth cusp morphology and short teeth.

Preventive measures for dental fluorosis:

Dental fluorosis is caused by incomplete development of tooth enamel due to excessive fluoride intake, so limiting fluoride intake is a key preventive measure. The recommended fluoride concentration in drinking water is 1ppm. At the same time, children should control the amount of fluoride toothpaste when brushing their teeth, generally the size of a soybean is appropriate.
