Is aluminum sulfate a precipitate?

Is aluminum sulfate a precipitate?

Aluminum sulfate is a precipitant for many rubber compounds, and can also be a retention agent in foam fire extinguishers. It is widely used, not only in papermaking, but also as a flocculant in drinking water or industrial water. Adding an appropriate amount of aluminum sulfate to water can adsorb and precipitate a large number of bacteria, making the color and taste of the water more ideal. So is aluminum sulfate a precipitate?

First, is aluminum sulfate a precipitate? Aluminum sulfate is easily soluble in water. If it is dissolved in distilled water, a clear and transparent solution can be obtained. However, once there are impurity particles (such as soil) in the water, it will appear turbid because the Al(OH)3 colloid obtained by the hydrolysis of Al3+ can adsorb these impurities and precipitate. Aluminum sulfate is a white orthorhombic crystalline powder with a wide range of applications, playing an important role in the papermaking industry and water treatment.

Second, aluminum sulfate is used as an effective cross-linking agent for animal glue and can increase the viscosity of animal glue. It is also used as a curing agent for urea-formaldehyde adhesives, and its 20% aqueous solution cures quickly. In the papermaking industry, it is used as a precipitant for rosin glue, wax emulsion and other sizing materials, as a flocculant in water treatment, and as an internal retention agent in foam fire extinguishers. It is also a raw material for making alum and aluminum white, and a raw material for petroleum decolorizing and deodorizing agents and certain medicines. It can also be used to make artificial gemstones and high-grade ammonium alum. Products with arsenic content not exceeding 5 mg/kg can be used as water treatment flocculants.

Third, it is used as a paper sizing agent in the papermaking industry to enhance the water resistance and anti-seepage properties of paper; it is used as a turbid water purifier, and is also used as a precipitant, color fixing agent, filler, etc. In cosmetics, it is used as a raw material for antiperspirant cosmetics (astringent); when dissolved in water, it can cause the fine particles and natural colloids in the water to condense into large flocs, thereby removing them from the water, so it is used as a coagulant for water supply and wastewater; it can be used as a raw material for the manufacture of artificial gemstones and high-grade ammonium alum and other aluminates; in the fuel industry, it is used as a precipitant in the production of chrome yellow and lake dyes, and also acts as a color fixer and filler. Analytical reagents, mordants, tanning agents, oil decolorizers, wood preservatives;

Is aluminum sulfate a precipitate? Aluminum sulfate is generally not considered a precipitate, but the hydrolysis of AL3+ must be considered, and it may produce AL(OH)3 precipitate. After dissolving in water, it is a colloid with metastable properties. When the ionization equilibrium is destroyed, it will precipitate.
