Will pterygium disappear on its own?

Will pterygium disappear on its own?

Many friends with pterygium are often told by doctors not to worry, as pterygium will not affect their daily life. So will pterygium disappear on its own? Generally speaking, pterygium will not disappear on its own. It can be removed with medication or surgery. At the same time, you should also pay attention to protecting your eyes and avoid excessive eye fatigue, so as to prevent the pterygium from becoming larger and affecting your vision.

There are two types of pterygium:

(1) Progressive type: The neck of the pterygium is wide, with many new blood vessels, congestion, hypertrophy, and a triangular body that extends to both sides. The head is obviously bulging and grows into the surface of the black eyeball, even covering the pupil.

(2) Static type: The pterygium stops growing when it reaches the edge of the pupil. It is not congested, is slightly red, has a flat head, and a thin neck and body. It is in a relatively static state, but does not disappear on its own .

There is also a type of pseudopterygium, which can grow anywhere on the edge of the black eyeball. It is generally small and has a grayish white surface, but some can also be thicker. Scar tissue often forms due to trauma, ulcers of the corneal margin, or chemical or thermal burns of the conjunctiva and generally does not grow back after it forms. It is completely different in nature from the previous two types of pterygium.

[Treatment] What should I do if I have pterygium?

Generally, you should go to the hospital for examination and treatment. There are two common prevention and control methods:

(1) Drug treatment: For patients with static type, if the pterygium has not invaded the black pupil and does not affect vision, no treatment is necessary. For those with trachoma or chronic conjunctivitis, antibiotic or glucocorticoid eye drops can be used, such as 0.25% chloramphenicol or 0.5% cortisone eye drops, 3 to 4 times a day. In terms of traditional Chinese medicine, you can use Xiaonioling eye drops to apply to the eyes 4 times a day.

(2) For patients with progressive pterygium or pterygium growing into the pupil and affecting vision, they should go to the hospital for pterygium removal, but it is easy to relapse. If conditions permit, 90 strontium irradiation or beta irradiation can be performed after surgery to prevent recurrence.

Of course, this operation must be performed under a microscope to achieve the ideal effect. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that during the treatment period, one should avoid eating spicy foods such as chili peppers and onions, and should avoid smoking and drinking.

[Prevention] The main way to prevent pterygium is to avoid smoke, sandstorms and sunlight as much as possible, pay attention to eye hygiene, and seek timely treatment for trachoma or other types of conjunctivitis. At the same time, you should pay attention to adequate sleep, regular life, avoid dry stools and other adjustments to your overall condition.
