What are the dangers of eye pterygium

Many people become very panicked when they find pterygium in their eyes, fearing that it will lead to serious problems such as blindness. However, pterygium in the eyes is not that serious and can usually be cured after some minor surgery. But this does not mean that pterygium in the eyes is harmless to people. So let me tell you the specific dangers of eye pterygium.

1. When the pterygium has not yet invaded the cornea, that is, has not yet grown on the black eyeball, the harm is relatively small. The main manifestation is that after being stimulated by ultraviolet rays, dust, smoke, dryness, chemicals, etc., the body of the pterygium (the part that grows on the surface of the white eyeball) becomes congested, affecting its appearance. Surgery can be performed if the appearance is seriously affected.

2. When the head of the pterygium reaches and gradually invades the cornea, it can invade the anterior elastic layer of the cornea and the superficial layer of the corneal substance, causing cell infiltration and resulting in corneal opacity near the head of the pterygium. The enlarged and congested pterygium can compress the local cornea and cause astigmatism, resulting in double vision. Surgery is possible.

3. When pterygium progresses to the pupil area, the opaque pterygium tissue blocks the light in the pupil area and affects vision. At this point, doctors usually recommend surgery.

4. If the pterygium completely covers the pupil area, vision may deteriorate to blindness. And because scars will form on the cornea after pterygium surgery, even if the pterygium that completely covers the pupil is removed, the improvement in vision is limited.

Causes of formation:

Pterygium is a wing-shaped invasion of the bulbar conjunctiva and fibrovascular tissue into the superficial layer of the cornea. It is a lesion caused by the proliferation and degeneration of conjunctival tissue.

1. Long-term exposure to smoke, dust, wind, sunlight, cold and heat stimulation, conjunctival connective tissue degeneration and hyperplasia, hypertrophic bulbar conjunctiva and subconjunctival tissue invade from bulbar conjunctiva to corneal surface;

2. Diet, emotions, etc. cause the internal organs to become out of balance, causing evil heat to attack the eyes and blood to stagnate in the canthus, leading to illness. If the eye fissure is often exposed to wind, sand, smoke, or sunlight, it can accelerate the growth and development of pterygium.

3. In addition, pterygium is closely related to the overdevelopment of the control ligament of the medial rectus muscle and genetic factors.
