Many people feel pain in the bones in their buttocks when they sleep lying down. Lying down will first compress the coccyx and spine. The coccyx is right in the middle of the buttocks. Coccyx pain is mainly caused by nerve conduction. Severe cases can cause pain in the perineum and anus. It is not ruled out that the coccyx pain may be caused by diseases such as inflammation or tumors. Causes of pain The sensory nerves in the coccyx area come from the fourth and fifth sacral vertebrae and the coccygeal nerve itself. When there is a lesion in the reproductive and urinary system in the pelvic cavity, the pain will involve the coccygeal nerve through the sacral nerve, which is the cause of pseudo-coccygealgia. Coccyx pain may also have other causes, including trauma, chronic inflammation of the coccyx joint, bone lesions, and chronic damage caused by abnormal sitting posture, etc. Symptoms of coccyx pain include tenderness near the coccyx in the buttocks or leg pain, including the coccyx, levator ani muscles and surrounding soft tissues. The ratio of male to female patients is two to six, and the age of patients is not limited to the elderly, but people aged between 10 and 70 may suffer from this disease. People who sit in an incorrect posture for a long time, have had surgery on the perineum (between the anus and external genitalia) and rectum, or have had a dislocated or fractured coccyx may experience coccyx discomfort. As for women, due to the special structure of the pelvis or because the fetus is too large, vaginal delivery directly compresses the coccyx nerve, causing coccyx pain. If you have ever had an accident, such as falling or slipping from a bicycle or motorcycle, falling down the stairs, or a sports injury, the coccyx may have been directly hit and may cause coccyx pain and other discomfort. Clinical symptoms In clinical practice, most patients suffering from coccyx pain are young women. Some suffer from acute pain, while others suffer from chronic diseases that have not improved despite long-term treatments. Patients are often unable to sit or stand in a normal manner and always feel more comfortable lying in bed or standing. This pain is sometimes only concentrated at the tip of the coccyx, with local tenderness, but for some people the pain range is more vague. The pain is sometimes exacerbated by increased pressure on the levator ani muscles. If the pain worsens at night or when you cough or sneeze continuously, you should be especially careful, because sometimes tumors near the coccyx or spinal tumors can cause similar symptoms. Physical examination Pay attention to whether there is any abnormal sensation near the coccyx or just tenderness. Male patients must undergo an anal examination to check for prostate abnormalities. Female patients undergo pelvic and genitourinary examinations based on symptoms. Internal examination can be performed to check for pain or tumors in the coccyx. |
