What are Alkyl Betaines?

What are Alkyl Betaines?

Alkyl betaine, as the name suggests, is an alkaline substance extracted from beets. It has good stability and detergency and is often used in detergents. Alkyl betaine, with different numbers of alkyl carbons, has different names and properties, but they can all be used as surfactants. Let's take a look at the types of alkyl betaine and their specific functions.

The quaternization of aliphatic tertiary amines is adopted, that is, N-alkyl-N, N-dimethylamine is reacted with sodium chloroacetate in aqueous solution. Molecular formula: RN+(CH3)2CH2COO- where R is the carbon number of 12~18. Alkyl betaine can be compatible with various types of dyes, surfactants and cosmetic raw materials. It is stable to sodium hypochlorite and should not be heated for a long time at above 100°C. This product has excellent stability under both acidic and alkaline conditions and good compatibility. It has low skin irritation, good biodegradability, excellent decontamination and sterilization, softness, antistatic property, hard water resistance and rust resistance.

Trimethylammonium acetate is a natural product discovered by Scheibler and separated from betaine. It is named beta-in according to its Latin name beta vulgaris. Its structure is as follows: CH3N+(CH3)2CH2COO-. Scheibler called this compound isolated from beets, which has a quaternary ammonium salt structure or an ammonium structure, "betaine". When the methyl group in natural betaine can be replaced by other substituents, many alkyl aromatic betaine or alkyl amide propyl betaine can be obtained; the carbon bridge connecting the positive and negative charge centers can be extended to obtain propyl betaine, butyl betaine, etc.; the acetate group can also be replaced by other groups to obtain amphoteric surfactants such as sulfoethyl, sulfopropyl betaine or sulfate (ethyl) betaine, phosphate (ethyl) betaine.

This type of product has excellent foaming ability and can make hair soft. It is suitable for preparing shampoo, bubble bath, sensitive skin preparations, children's cleansers, etc. Because of its good water resistance, it is used in the preparation of hard water detergents. It can also be used as a bactericide to kill a variety of bacteria including tuberculosis, as a fiber, fabric softener and antistatic agent, calcium soap dispersant, bactericidal and disinfecting detergent, gel emulsifier in the rubber industry, rabbit wool shrinking agent, fire extinguishing foam agent, etc. It is also a synergist for the pesticide glyphosate. It is also used in the production of dyeing auxiliaries, rust inhibitors, and metal surface processing auxiliaries.

1. Dodecyl dimethyl betaine

Alkylamide betaine is different from tertiary amine in starting material, with molecular formula: RCONH(CH)nN+(CH3)2CH2COO-, where R is carbon number 12~18, n=2,3. Its performance is significantly improved compared with alkyl betaine: it has excellent solubility and compatibility, excellent foaming and significant thickening, low irritation and bactericidal properties. Its combination can significantly improve the softness, conditioning and low-temperature stability of detergent products, and has good hard water resistance, antistatic and biodegradability.
