How should a stye inside the eye be treated?

People's eyes rarely get sick, but once a disease occurs, it is very harmful. Eye pain can cause various problems in our body. Many people often have styes in their eyes. Styes are caused by frequent staying up late, excessive body heat, and frequent consumption of spicy and greasy foods. These can cause the appearance of styes. The inner stye of the eye is commonly known as the internal stye. Stye is also called stye. The redness and swelling of the eye at the beginning of the disease can be subsided by ice compresses in a few days. If it has not recovered, it can be treated with medication. If there is no effect for a long time and the symptoms are not relieved, a small operation is required to solve it. When a stye first occurs, you can apply ice to the swollen and painful eyelids, use anti-inflammatory eye drops, and take oral antibiotics if necessary. Most cases will resolve within three to four days; if the gland is swollen and purulent, surgical incision and drainage are required.

A stye (hordeolum) is caused by infection, usually with staphylococci, that affects the eyelid margin or one or more glands within the eyelid.

This disease can form abscesses and have a tendency to break through the skin and release pus. Stye can form spontaneously or be caused by facial inflammation. A person may develop 1-2 styes in his life, and some people may have recurrent styes.

The initial symptoms of stye are local congestion, increased tension, and pain at the edge, followed by the formation of a small round, tender swelling area, increased tearing, photophobia, and a foreign body sensation. Eyelid swelling is mostly localized, but sometimes may involve the entire eyelid. In the later stages, a small yellow pus spot may form in the center of the swollen area.

Although antibiotics can be used for treatment, the effect is not obvious. The best treatment is warm compresses. Apply hot compress several times a day for 10 minutes each time. Hot compresses can help localize styes and speed up the rupture of abscesses, allowing pus to drain.

The pain and other symptoms of a stye that forms in a gland deep inside the eyelid (internal stye) are more severe. The pain, redness, and swelling are localized to a small area, usually around the edge of the face. Because this type of stye rarely bursts on its own, a doctor sometimes needs to make an incision to drain the pus. Internal styes have a tendency to recur.

There are two types of styes:

External hordeolum: When the sebaceous glands in the hair follicles of the eyelashes are infected by staphylococci, it is called eyelid furuncle, commonly known as "stye". People with poor hygiene, weak constitution or refractive errors are prone to this disease. When the disease occurs, the eyelids become locally red, swollen, congested and tender, and nodules can be felt near the eyelid margin. Sometimes the preauricular lymph nodes are enlarged and tender, and there may even be symptoms such as chills, fever, and general discomfort. After a few days, yellow pus spots appeared at the roots of the hair follicles. After the pus was drained, the symptoms gradually improved and healed. If an external stye is allowed to burst and drain pus after it becomes purulent, it often causes sequelae such as eyelid deformation, ectropion, and incomplete closure of the upper and lower palpebral fissures due to scar contraction, so attention should be paid.

Internal stye: also known as blepharitis. Initially the eyelids are red and swollen, but because the tarsal plate is deeper, the new pain is more severe. When the abscess has not broken, yellow pus heads often appear on the conjunctiva of the eyelid. After it matures, it can break through and drain the pus and heal on its own.

Regardless of whether it is an internal or external stye, if pressure is applied to squeeze out the pus, bacteria and toxins will easily flow back into the skull, causing serious complications such as orbital cellulitis and sponge embolism, which can be life-threatening in severe cases. Therefore, when you have a "sty", do not squeeze it.

In the early stages of a stye or before an abscess forms, you can apply local hot and wet compresses three times a day for 20 minutes each time. Hot compress can speed up blood circulation in the eyes and reduce swelling and relieve pain. Apply 0.5% chloramphenicol ointment or other antibiotic ointment to the conjunctival sac. 2 to 3 times a day. Those with systemic symptoms can take antibiotics or sulfonamides, or intramuscularly inject penicillin.

When the external hordeolum is obviously softened locally but has not yet ruptured, anesthesia is not required and the pus can be drained by making an incision parallel to the eyelid margin. When there is an obvious pus head on the membrane surface of the internal hordeolum, 0.5% cane can be dripped three times, and after surface anesthesia, the tip of the knife can be used to make an incision perpendicular to the eyelid margin to drain the pus.

During the treatment, pay attention to rest, do not eat irritating foods, drink water frequently and keep bowel movements smooth. If the stye does not subside for a long time and leaves a nodule, after the acute inflammation subsides, an incision can be made on the eyelid junction surface to scrape out the contents, and the residual capsule and granuloma can be cut off.
