How is mandibular joint disorder syndrome treated?

Temporomandibular joint disorder syndrome, also known as temporomandibular joint syndrome, is a common facial disease that often occurs in young people between the ages of 20 and 30. There are many reasons why he became ill. For example, there has been external force impact, often chewing hard food or grinding teeth at night, but the specific cause of the disease is still unclear. So how do you treat mandibular joint disorder syndrome?

1. Causes

Temporomandibular joint disorder syndrome is common in young and middle-aged people. Its pathogenesis is not yet fully understood. The main characteristics of this disease are soreness, swelling and pain in the joint area, snapping during movement, and difficulty opening the mouth. Most cases are joint dysfunction with a good prognosis; however, organic changes may occur in very rare cases.

1. Traumatic factors Many patients have a history of local trauma. Such as acute traumas such as external impact, sudden biting of hard objects, opening the mouth too wide (such as yawning); also frequent chewing of hard food, nighttime grinding of teeth, and unilateral chewing habits. These factors may cause joint contusion or strain, and dysfunction of the chewing muscles may also have a certain impact on the occurrence of this disease.

2. Occlusal factors Many patients have obvious occlusal disorders. Such as high tooth cusps, excessive tooth wear, too many missing molars, poor dentures, and too low intermaxillary distance. Disorders in occlusal relationships can disrupt the functional balance between the internal structures of the joints and promote the occurrence of this disease.

3. Systemic and other neuropsychiatric factors may have a certain relationship with this disease. For example, some patients are irritable, nervous, and easily excited. In addition, some patients have a history of rheumatism, and some of their illnesses are related to cold.

2. Clinical manifestations

The main clinical manifestations of temporomandibular joint disorder syndrome include local soreness or pain, clicking and movement disorders. The pain may be located in the joint area or around the joints; it may be accompanied by tenderness of varying degrees. Joint soreness or pain is especially noticeable when chewing or opening the mouth. The snapping sound occurs when the mouth is opened. The sound can occur at different stages of mandibular movement and can be a crisp single sound or a series of fragmented sounds. The most common movement disorder is limited mouth opening, but excessive mouth opening or mandibular deviation when opening the mouth may also occur. In addition, it may be accompanied by symptoms such as temporal pain, dizziness, and tinnitus.

3. Specific treatment measures:

1. Correction of occlusal relationship is examined and treated by a dental specialist.

2. Blockade therapy can be performed with 3 to 5 ml of 0.25-0.5% procaine to block the lateral pterygoid muscle. The puncture point is at the midpoint of the sigmoid notch. The needle is inserted vertically to a depth of about 2.5 to 3 cm. The medicine is injected when no blood is aspirated. Often used for patients with wide mouth opening.

3. Ethyl chloride spray combined with massage can relieve masticatory muscle spasms. When spraying ethyl chloride, it should be in mist form, spray intermittently, and massage at the same time to prevent frostbite. And pay attention to protect your eyes and ears and stay away from fire.

4. Acupuncture points: Xiaguan, Tinggong, Jiache, Hegu, Peiyifeng and Taiyang.

5. Local physical therapies such as ultrashort wave, ion introduction, electrical excitement and magnetic therapy have certain therapeutic effects.

During treatment, bad habits (such as unilateral chewing) should be corrected and the mouth should be prevented from opening too wide.
