Are there any symptoms of low potassium? What are the symptoms?

Low potassium is a symptom of potassium deficiency in the body. Potassium is very important to the human body. It is an important basic substance for the body's endocrine system and plays an important role in maintaining a healthy metabolism. Hypokalemia is caused by low potassium content, which needs to be taken seriously by people. Let’s take a look at whether there are any symptoms of low potassium. What are the symptoms?

Potassium is an indispensable element for the human body, and its main function is to maintain the normal function of nerves and muscles. Therefore, once the human body lacks potassium, not only will the energy and physical strength decrease, but the heat resistance will also be reduced. The most prominent manifestation is soreness and weakness in the limbs, and varying degrees of relaxation and paralysis of the neuromuscular system, especially in the lower limbs, which is called potassium deficiency paralysis. In severe cases, it can also lead to acid-base imbalance, metabolic disorders, arrhythmias in the human body, and be accompanied by cardiovascular system dysfunction, such as chest tightness, palpitations, and even respiratory muscle paralysis and difficulty breathing.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism:

A mild decrease in blood potassium levels usually causes no symptoms. More severe potassium deficiency (blood potassium concentration below 3mmol/L) can cause muscle weakness, convulsions, and even paralysis, and produce arrhythmia, especially in people with heart disease. Therefore, heart patients taking digoxin are at particular risk for hypokalemia.

Causes of hypothyroidism:

Normal kidneys have a good potassium conservation function. Low potassium levels in the blood, usually due to abnormal kidney function or excessive gastrointestinal excretion (vomiting, diarrhea, use of laxatives, or colon polyps). Many foods contain potassium, so low potassium levels are rarely caused by consuming too little. Therefore, if symptoms of hypothyroidism appear, people should take timely supplements according to the cause of the disease to prevent more serious complications caused by hypothyroidism.
