Are there any side effects of dental implants?

When teeth fall out or become chipped, it greatly affects the appearance. Many people choose dental implants, which is a better treatment method to restore tooth function and is currently a commonly used treatment method. However, you need to be aware of some of the side effects of dental implants, such as wound rupture, bleeding, lower lip numbness, and gingival hyperplasia.

1. Wound dehiscence

This happens because the sutures are too tight or too loose when the dental implant is placed. Especially when the dental implant is not cleaned properly and infection is induced, it is more likely to cause local wound dehiscence. The solution to the hazard is to perform timely debridement and re-suturing to avoid implant exposure.

2. Bleeding

Dental implant is a minimally invasive surgery and there should be no bleeding after the tooth is implanted. Why do dental implants lead to "blood disasters"? This is due to inadequate dental implant technology. Dental implants still cause certain damage to periodontal tissues. If the dentist causes severe damage during mucoperiosteal stripping or extensive submucosal stripping, especially if the postoperative compression is poor, submucosal or subcutaneous bleeding is likely to occur.

3. Numbness of lower lip

If the dental implant technology is in place, the nerve will not be damaged, because there is a nerve under the alveolar bone, called the inferior alveolar nerve. If the implant is placed at the back, it will damage the nerve. Therefore, in order to protect the nerve, it is implanted in front of the nerve. However, if the dentist damages the mental nerve during dissection, or directly traumatizes the inferior alveolar nerve during implant placement, the patient will experience numbness in the lower lip. Damage to the mandibular nerve can usually be restored, but if the inferior alveolar nerve is damaged, the implant should be removed and re-implanted away from the nerve.

4. Gingival hyperplasia

This is a complication caused by the implant "root" penetrating too little into the gums, or poor connection between the "root" and the bridge. It will cause poor local hygiene and long-term chronic inflammatory stimulation, and the final result is gingival hyperplasia.

5. Infection

If the patient does not choose a regular hospital for dental implant surgery, there may be a risk of infection. This is mostly due to poor disinfection during surgery or contamination of surgical instruments.
