The dangers of nasal septum deviation

The dangers of nasal septum deviation

The nasal septum is actually the tissue in the nose that divides the nasal cavity into two parts. If the nasal septum is deviated, the patient may experience nasal congestion or nose bleeding, and in more severe cases, it may also cause headaches or sinusitis.

1. Nasal septum perforation: Nasal septum perforation is commonly seen in the following situations: (1) During nasal septum surgery, the soft tissue is dissected roughly, causing it to rupture symmetrically on both sides. (2) When there is infectious inflammation of the nasal mucosa, even a unilateral tear can lead to perforation. (3) If the soft tissues on both sides of the nasal septum are not separated sufficiently, the soft tissues are easily torn even if the cartilage or bone is removed. .

2. Septal hematoma: It is caused by bleeding between the perichondrium of the nasal septum. After the operation, if the nasal packing is removed, semicircular ridges are found on both sides of the nasal septum, and the texture is soft, the patient complains of nasal congestion, which does not improve despite the use of ephedrine and saline. Small hematomas can be absorbed by themselves, while larger hematomas must be treated.

3. Nasal septum abscess: caused by bacterial infection of nasal septum hematoma. Improper timing of surgery, such as during the nasal infection period or when there is a lot of purulent secretions, can cause infection at the incision site. Nasal congestion is often the main symptom. If the nasal deflection is to one side, the nasal congestion is usually unilateral; if the nasal deflection is to both sides, such as S-shaped deviation, the nasal congestion is usually bilateral. However, if the inferior turbinate on the other side of the patient with unilateral deviation is compensatory and hypertrophies, bilateral nasal congestion may also occur. Nosebleeds are often symptomatic.
