Where is the patella

Where is the patella

Many people call our knee joint the patella. In fact, in medicine, this place is called the patella, and the patella is very fragile. Many times when we are doing some movements, we need to put the weight of the whole body on the patella, which can easily cause patellar injury. Therefore, we should pay attention to our physical health during exercise. So where is the patella in the body?

Patella

Located in front of the knee joint, in front of the lower end of the femur, it is the largest sesamoid bone in the human body. It is embedded in the quadriceps tendon and is a triangular flat bone. The base faces upward, the tip faces downward, the front is rough, and the back is a smooth articular surface. It articulates with the patellar surface of the femur and participates in the formation of the knee joint. Can be felt on the body surface.

1. The patella, commonly known as the kneecap, is a sesamoid bone formed in the quadriceps femoris tendon. It is also the largest sesamoid bone in the body. It is flat and millet-shaped, located under the skin and easy to feel. It is wide at the top and pointed downward, with a rough front and smooth back. It can move up and down, left and right, and protects the knee joint. The back of the patella is smooth and covered with cartilage, connecting to the patellar surface of the femur. The front is rough, and the quadriceps tendon passes through it.

2. The main functions of the patella are: to transmit and enhance the action of the quadriceps; to assist in maintaining the stability of the knee joint, to protect the knee joint, and to act as a pulley during knee extension.
