Is art gouache paint poisonous

Gouache may not be particularly familiar to us. Those who study fine arts or painting know more about it. Gouache is a pigment we use when painting. It brings a lot of color to our paintings. Many of the beautiful paintings we see are gouache paintings. Generally, painters often come into contact with gouache, but we come into contact with it every day. So, is gouache poisonous? Let’s take a look together!

Ingredients of gouache paint: The production of gouache paint requires various colorants, fillers, binders, wetting agents, preservatives and other binders.

Colorant - Use a ball mill to grind the pigment into a very fine powder.

Fillers - mainly various white pigments or wheat starch, etc.

Solidifying agents - dextrin, gum, etc.

Wetting agent - rock sugar, glycerin, etc.

Preservatives – carbolic acid or formalin.

Someone bought 120 sets of commonly used children's graffiti supplies, including watercolor pens, crayons, gouache paints, oil pastels and fluorescent pens, produced by different manufacturers in the market and on the Internet, and submitted them to the National Culture and Education Quality Supervision and Inspection Center for testing. According to the test report of the National Culture and Education Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, Greentop Company found that 30% of its watercolor pens and fluorescent pens contained harmful heavy metals, while the proportion of harmful heavy metals contained in commonly used graffiti products for children, such as crayons, oil pastels and gouache paints, was as high as 80%.

Heavy metals are the "invisible killers" that endanger children's health. The test report of the National Culture and Education Quality Supervision and Inspection Center shows that children's graffiti supplies such as crayons, oil pastels and gouache paints containing heavy metals were detected this time. Each sample contained at least one heavy metal, including lead, barium, antimony, arsenic, selenium, cadmium and chromium. According to Wang Lingfang, almost all the products that were found to contain heavy metals this time were found to contain lead, and some products contained more than just one harmful heavy metal. Lead is one of the most toxic and cumulative heavy metals known. Lead and its compounds are toxic to all tissues of the human body and are particularly harmful to children. Even small amounts of lead can have adverse effects on children's neurological development, making them extremely vulnerable to toxic and hazardous substances.

Students studying art now know whether gouache is toxic. No matter what kind of paint it is, we should use it with caution. We must pay more attention to it and do not use inferior paints. At the very least, we should use paints produced by regular manufacturers. I believe that through this article, we have a better understanding of gouache, and students can judge according to their own situation.
