What is Crohn's disease and what are the treatments?

The so-called Crohn's disease is inflammatory bowel disease. Clinical symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, intestinal obstruction and other multiple symptoms. Moreover, the characteristic of this severe Crohn's disease is that it occurs more frequently in males than in females. Of course, there are many causes of severe Crohn's disease, mainly genetic factors, infection, immune response, etc., which endanger the health of modern people.

Severe Crohn's disease is normally a slow-onset disease. Of course, in our daily lives, in addition to symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea, we may also experience oral ulcers, arthritis and other symptoms outside the intestines. Therefore, if you feel unwell, you need to seek medical attention promptly.

The medical treatment principles and medications for this disease are roughly the same as those for ulcerative colitis.

1. General treatment: Patients with active lesions should rest in bed and be given a high-calorie, easily digestible, nutritious diet. Severe patients should be given fluid replacement, correction of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, intravenous high-nutrient therapy or nasogastric feeding elemental diet.

2. Sulfapyridine salicylate has a certain therapeutic effect on this disease, and its usage refers to ulcerative colitis.

3. Adrenal glucocorticoids are suitable for the active stage of the disease and are effective in controlling symptoms.

4. Other drugs such as ampicillin should be used to control secondary intestinal infections, and metronidazole can be given for intestinal anaerobic infections.

5. Surgical treatment: The indications for surgery are limited to intestinal perforation, complete intestinal obstruction, massive lower gastrointestinal bleeding, fistula and abscess formation, toxic megacolon that has not responded to medical treatment, and suspected colon cancer.

The disease may improve after treatment or resolve on its own. However, most patients suffer from prolonged illness, recurrent attacks and poor prognosis.

Therefore, the treatment for severe Crohn's disease is mainly surgical. However, it should be noted that because severe Crohn's disease has a poor prognosis and is often prone to recurrence, patients with severe Crohn's disease still need to cooperate with the doctor's treatment to avoid affecting their health.
