The cure rate of colorectal cancer patients

The cure rate of colorectal cancer patients

The cure rate of colorectal cancer depends on the stage of the disease, the patient's physical condition and the choice of treatment measures. The cure rate of early colorectal cancer is relatively high, reaching about 80% to 90%, while the cure rate of late colorectal cancer will drop significantly due to the spread of cancer. Optimizing treatment plans, early detection and comprehensive treatment are the keys to improving the cure rate of colorectal cancer.

1. Effect of different stages on cure rate

Bowel cancer is divided into stages I to IV, and the earlier the stage, the higher the chance of cure.

- Stage I (early-stage colorectal cancer): Cancer cells are confined to the inner layer of the intestinal wall and surgical resection can usually achieve a radical cure with a cure rate of over 90%.

- Stage II and III (locally advanced): At this time, the cancer cells may have invaded the deep layers of the intestinal wall or spread to nearby lymph nodes. The cure rate is generally 50% to 80%. Chemotherapy and targeted therapy are recommended after surgery to prevent recurrence.

- Stage IV (late stage tumor): Cancer cells have spread to distant sites, often to the liver and lungs, making it difficult to cure, with a cure rate of less than 10%. Survival can be prolonged through surgery, chemotherapy, and targeted drugs, and some patients can achieve longer remission through complex treatments.

2. Common treatment methods and their effects

In addition to staging, a reasonable treatment plan has a significant impact on the cure rate of colorectal cancer. The following are several main treatment methods:

-Surgery: used to remove the primary tumor or metastasis. It is particularly critical for patients in stage I and II and is the basis for cure. Minimally invasive surgery (such as laparoscopic technology) reduces trauma and helps to recover faster.

-Chemotherapy: Postoperative chemotherapy is the core therapy to prevent recurrence, using drugs such as oxaliplatin, 5-fluorouracil, etc. It has a significant effect on stage III and a small number of stage II patients.

- Targeted therapy and immunotherapy: For patients with advanced tumors or metastases, combined treatment with targeted drugs such as bevacizumab and cetuximab can control disease progression and improve quality of life. Immune checkpoint inhibitors have also shown some promise in recent years.

3. Lifestyle interventions to improve cure rates

A healthy lifestyle can effectively reduce recurrence and improve treatment outcomes:

-Dietary adjustment: A low-fat, high-fiber diet is rich in dietary fiber, which helps improve gastrointestinal health. It is recommended to eat more antioxidant foods such as green leafy vegetables, whole grains, and deep-sea fish.

-Moderate exercise: 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week can help relieve postoperative fatigue and reduce the risk of recurrence.

-Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption: Smoking and drinking significantly increase the risk of colorectal cancer recurrence and deterioration and should be absolutely avoided.

Early detection is the key to curing colorectal cancer, so it is recommended that people over 45 years old undergo regular colonoscopy screening and seek medical attention as soon as possible if they have related symptoms such as blood in the stool and unexplained weight loss. Regular treatment, a healthy lifestyle and active recurrence prevention management can significantly increase the patient's survival time and cure rate.
