What is breast-conserving surgery for breast cancer

In the early years, the methods for treating breast cancer mainly included modified radical surgeries of breast cancer such as total mastectomy and modified mastectomy. In recent years, the number of breast cancer patients has gradually increased, and they are getting younger. More patients choose breast-conserving surgery to treat breast cancer. Breast-conserving surgery refers to the surgical method of removing malignant tumors and preserving the breast to achieve the purpose of treating breast cancer. Breast-conserving surgery for breast cancer is mainly suitable for patients with obvious breast-conserving tendency, tumor less than 5 cm, age greater than 35 years old, no history of radiotherapy and no diffuse lesions.

Why can breast cancer patients undergo breast-conserving surgery?

Studies have shown that breast cancer is a systemic disease from the beginning, and its cancer cells can penetrate the whole body through the blood. Therefore, even if the breast is completely removed, it is still a systemic disease and will cause recurrence and metastasis. This can be used as a theoretical basis for choosing breast-conserving surgery. At present, domestic and foreign studies have confirmed that breast-conserving surgery and mastectomy have the same therapeutic effect, and the risk of recurrence and metastasis is basically the same. Patients undergoing breast-conserving surgery combined with radiotherapy is a complete breast-conserving surgery model. At the same time, combined with standardized systemic treatment, it can achieve the same therapeutic effect as removing the breast.

Is breast-conserving surgery effective for early breast cancer?

If the early-stage breast cancer patient does not have contraindications to breast-conserving surgery, such as diffuse lesions, a history of radiotherapy, a large tumor, or a close distance to the nipple, it is recommended that the patient undergo breast-conserving surgery, and the patient's prognosis is generally good. The advantages of breast-conserving surgery for early breast cancer mainly include: 1. The tumor can be removed; 2. It will not affect the appearance of the breast; 3. It can restore the confidence of female patients. However, since breast cancer has certain biological laws, residual micro-lesions in the body may cause breast cancer to recur under the influence of external factors.
