Differentiated thyroid cancer has biological characteristics such as slow growth, good cell differentiation, low malignancy, and good prognosis. Patients can survive for a long time after surgical resection. Therefore, the extent of surgical resection has always been a hot topic in surgical debate. People want to explore and explain this issue from the perspective of evidence-based medicine, but from the currently collected literature, it is difficult to determine the extent of surgical resection.

Thyroid lobectomy for differentiated thyroid cancer mainly includes total thyroidectomy or near-total thyroidectomy. Subtotal thyroidectomy, i.e. total thyroidectomy of the affected lobe, total thyroidectomy of the contralateral lobe, and isthmus resection, is also a commonly used surgical method. Partial or subtotal resection of the affected lobe is not recommended. The commonly used treatment method in Western countries is total thyroidectomy or near-total thyroidectomy.

At present, many scholars at home and abroad advocate this surgery. Their main points are:

①It is helpful for radioactive iodine treatment;

② Use radioactive iodine scanning and thyroglobulin to monitor the recurrence and metastasis of thyroid cancer;

③It can improve the survival of high-risk groups and reduce the mortality rate;

④ Reduce the recurrence rate of all patients;

⑤ Reduce the risk of lung metastasis;

⑥Multifocal tumors can be cured at one time;

⑦ Eliminate the possibility of degeneration and differentiation;

⑧There are not many complications.
