Can laryngeal cancer be detected by CT?

Laryngeal cancer can be seen through CT, which can show the extent and range of tumor invasion and detect early cervical lymph node metastasis that is difficult to detect clinically. However, CT alone cannot accurately detect this disease, and usually requires combined examinations such as ultrasound, pathological tissue, and X-rays.

1. Ultrasound

Ultrasound examination helps to detect enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, determine the location of the lymph nodes and their relationship to surrounding tissues, and is also a method of random examination after postoperative radiotherapy.

2. Pathological tissue

Pathological tissue biopsy is the basis for the diagnosis of this disease and is the gold standard. Once a pharyngeal lesion is found, a biopsy should be performed promptly. The biopsy can be performed under indirect laryngoscopy or direct laryngoscopy. Patients with repeated bleeding or dyspnea should be careful when undergoing a biopsy.

3. X-ray

X-ray examination of the throat and side of the neck can provide detailed observation of the patient's throat and prevertebral soft tissues, helping to understand the extent of tumor infiltration in the throat. Contrast imaging of barium can also be used to understand the extent of lesions in the dimples, posterior cricoid and esophagus by observing whether the barium passes slowly and thinly.
