Obese women at higher risk of ovarian cancer

1. Ovarian cancer is one of the most deadly cancers. Most patients are diagnosed in the late stages of the disease, and 70% of patients will die within 5 years. There are several types of ovarian cancer, but the most common type is epithelial ovarian cancer, which begins in the cells on the surface of the ovary. Previous studies have only found that obesity can cause breast cancer, uterine cancer, colon and rectal cancer, and accelerate the process of cancer. However, the relationship between ovarian cancer and obesity is still difficult to understand. Obesity refers to a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 30.

To confirm the connection between obesity, ovarian cancer, tumors and prognosis, medical experts conducted a comparative study on 216 women with ovarian epithelial cancer, 35 of whom were obese and 108 of whom were of normal weight. The results showed that obesity has a great impact on the cancer recurrence rate and mortality rate of advanced patients. The study found that the characteristics of tumor cells in the two groups were also different.

3. The reason is that the fat tissue of obese patients secretes a hormone or protein that causes excessive growth of ovarian cancer cells. The researchers will conduct a more in-depth study on the relationship between weight and ovarian cancer to determine the biological mechanism that affects the growth of ovarian cancer.
