Does thyroid cancer require chemotherapy?

Does thyroid cancer require chemotherapy?

Thyroid cancer does not require chemotherapy. The treatment methods of thyroid cancer mainly include surgery, radionuclide therapy, endocrine therapy, targeted drug therapy, immunotherapy, etc. If the patient does not meet the surgical indications, chemotherapy is usually required to improve the survival rate.

1. Surgery: Surgery is the first choice for thyroid cancer treatment. It is usually recommended for patients with small lesions and no metastasis. After surgery, the need for chemotherapy can be determined based on pathology. If the pathology results show malignancy, chemotherapy is required to eliminate residual cancer cells.

2. Radionuclide therapy: Radionuclide therapy can emit radiation to kill cancer cells. For elderly and frail patients who are not suitable for surgery, radionuclide therapy can be performed first, and then surgery can be performed to reduce surgical damage;

3. Endocrine therapy: Thyroid hormone can regulate the body's metabolism and inhibit the synthesis and secretion of thyroid hormones. By inhibiting the secretion of thyrotropin and TSH, the purpose of treating thyroid cancer is achieved. Commonly used drugs include levothyroxine sodium tablets, etc., which need to be used under the guidance of a doctor;

4. Targeted drug therapy: Use targeted drugs such as carrelizumab for treatment under the guidance of a doctor to accurately kill cancer cells;

5. Immunotherapy: Specific antibodies against thyroid cancer can be isolated from the patient's blood to achieve the purpose of treatment. Commonly used drugs include atezolizumab, cetuximab, etc.

In addition to the above common treatments, chemotherapy, radionuclide therapy, etc. can also be used for patients with distant metastasis. Thyroid cancer does not require chemotherapy. It is recommended to go to the oncology department of the hospital in time, complete blood routine, color Doppler ultrasound and other examinations, and choose the appropriate treatment method under the guidance of the doctor.
