Does thyroid cancer cause itchy throat?

Thyroid cancer is a malignant tumor that originates from the thyroid follicular epithelium or parafollicular cells. There are many reasons for an itchy throat, including the disease itself, cancer metastasis, lymph node metastasis, and cancer combined with hyperthyroidism. It is recommended to go to the hospital for treatment in a timely manner and receive targeted treatment.

1. The disease itself: Patients with thyroid cancer generally have no obvious symptoms in the early stages, but as the disease progresses, a lump may appear in the neck. When the lump grows and compresses or invades the recurrent laryngeal nerve, it may cause symptoms such as itchy throat and hoarseness.

2. Cancer metastasis: If it is papillary thyroid cancer, follicular thyroid cancer, etc., it may metastasize through the lymphatic or blood routes. When the cervical lymph nodes metastasize to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, the patient may experience an itchy throat, and may also have symptoms such as irritating cough, choking, and difficulty breathing;

3. Lymph node metastasis: Thyroid cancer is more likely to metastasize to the cervical lymph nodes. When the cervical lymph nodes metastasize to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, the patient may experience an itchy throat, and may also be accompanied by symptoms such as hoarseness and coughing when drinking water.

4. Cancer combined with hyperthyroidism: If a thyroid cancer patient develops hyperthyroidism after surgery, the increase in thyroid hormones will cause the body's metabolism to accelerate, which in turn may stimulate the mucosal nerves in the throat and may cause the patient to have symptoms of itchy throat, accompanied by weight loss, palpitations, hand tremors and other symptoms.

In addition to the relatively common causes mentioned above, there are other possible diseases, such as pharyngitis and upper respiratory tract infection after thyroid cancer surgery.
