What are the sequelae of hemisection of thyroid cancer

The sequelae of hemisection of thyroid cancer may cause hypothyroidism, lymph node metastasis or nerve damage. Patients need to undergo routine follow-up examinations after surgery and receive timely treatment if sequelae occur.

1. Hypothyroidism: If a thyroid cancer patient undergoes hemisection surgery, the resection range is relatively large, which may affect the secretion of thyroid hormones, leading to a decrease in thyroid hormone levels. The patient is prone to slow metabolism, intellectual impairment, or mental abnormalities. Take levothyroxine sodium tablets or thyroid tablets and other drugs to supplement thyroid hormone under the guidance of a doctor;

2. Lymph node metastasis: During hemisection of thyroid cancer, if the lymph node dissection is relatively large, lymph node metastasis may occur. Local lymphatic reflux obstruction may occur, causing edema. When lymph node metastasis occurs, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are routinely required after surgery to inhibit metastasis;

3. Nerve damage: During hemisection of thyroid cancer, the recurrent laryngeal nerve may be damaged, causing postoperative hoarseness. Or the esophagus and trachea may be damaged, causing choking and difficulty in swallowing. This can be relieved through proper exercise, or taking drugs such as methylcobalamin tablets to nourish the nerves as prescribed by the doctor;

4. Skin damage: After hemisection of thyroid cancer, if the sweat glands and sebaceous glands of the skin are damaged, it may lead to reduced sweating and dry skin. You need to pay attention to skin care to avoid damage;

5. Other sequelae: After hemisection of thyroid cancer, if the cervical sympathetic nerve is accidentally injured, it may cause symptoms such as pupil dilation and eyelid adduction disorder. Damage to the sympathetic nerve can cause Horner syndrome, with symptoms such as pupil constriction and eyelid ptosis.

Patients are advised to do routine checkups, pay attention to reexaminations, and receive timely treatment when sequelae occur. At the same time, they should pay attention to adjusting their diet structure and eat more fresh vegetables and fruits, such as spinach and apples.
