Can't have children if you have thyroid cancer?

Whether a thyroid cancer patient can have a baby depends mainly on the severity of the thyroid cancer and the patient's physical condition. If the thyroid cancer is mild and the patient is in good physical condition, she can have a normal pregnancy and childbirth. If the thyroid cancer is severe or the patient is in the middle or late stage of thyroid cancer, radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be used during treatment, and having a baby is not recommended at this time.

1. Mild thyroid cancer: If the thyroid cancer has not invaded surrounding tissues, has not metastasized to distant sites, and has undergone total thyroidectomy, the patient is in good physical condition and has no symptoms of excessive suppression of thyroid hormones. At this time, normal pregnancy and childbirth are possible, but thyroid function needs to be closely monitored during pregnancy to pay attention to symptoms such as hypothyroidism.

2. Advanced thyroid cancer: If thyroid cancer has invaded surrounding tissues and has lymph node metastasis or distant metastasis, it is not possible to get pregnant and have a baby. You need to undergo systematic treatment first to remove the tumor lesions, and then use radioactive treatment methods such as iodine-131 to cure the thyroid cancer before getting pregnant.

3. Late-stage thyroid cancer: If thyroid cancer has developed to the late stage and bone metastasis, lung metastasis, liver metastasis, etc. have occurred, it is not recommended to have a baby at this time. Because after treatment in the late stage, some patients may experience symptoms of thyroid hormone suppression, such as loss of appetite, weight loss, weakness, etc. At this time, the physical condition is poor, which is not conducive to the growth and development of the fetus. During the treatment, the patient's condition should be closely monitored. If the condition is stable, it is necessary to wait for the patient to become pregnant again.

In addition, the patient's mental state is also very important. Some patients may have negative emotions due to the disease, so we should try to keep the patient optimistic to face the disease. It is recommended that thyroid cancer patients should actively cooperate with doctors for treatment and adjust their mentality, which will help increase the survival rate.
