Does thyroid cancer cause hoarseness?

Does thyroid cancer cause hoarseness?

Whether thyroid cancer will cause hoarseness depends on the type of thyroid cancer. If it is a differentiated thyroid cancer such as papillary cancer or follicular cancer, it generally does not cause hoarseness. However, if it is an undifferentiated cancer or medullary cancer, it may cause hoarseness.

1. Papillary carcinoma: Papillary carcinoma is a common type of thyroid cancer, accounting for about 60% of all thyroid cancers. This type of thyroid cancer has a low degree of malignancy and a good prognosis. Patients usually have no obvious symptoms, so it will not cause hoarseness;

2. Follicular carcinoma: Follicular carcinoma accounts for about 30% of all thyroid cancers and is a low-grade malignant thyroid cancer. This type of thyroid cancer usually grows slowly, with no obvious symptoms in the early stages, but may cause hoarseness in the later stages;

3. Undifferentiated cancer: Undifferentiated cancer accounts for about 5%-10% of all thyroid cancers. It is highly malignant and has a poor prognosis. This type of thyroid cancer develops rapidly and progresses quickly, and symptoms of hoarseness may occur in the early stages.

4. Medullary carcinoma: Medullary carcinoma accounts for about 5% of all thyroid cancers and is a special type of thyroid tumor. This type of thyroid cancer usually secretes more calcitonin and 5-hydroxytryptamine, which can cause hoarseness.

In addition to the above situations, if there is lymphocytic thyroiditis, it may also cause similar symptoms in patients. It is recommended that patients go to the hospital for treatment in time, complete relevant examinations under the guidance of the doctor, and follow the doctor's advice for targeted treatment.
