1. Patients should take in too much protein

2. Patients should control their salt intake

Patients with ascites due to liver damage weaken the function of antidiuretic hormone, reduce urine volume, and retain salt in the body. Patients should not eat more than 5g of salt per day; for those with severe edema, it should not exceed 1g.

3. Patients should avoid spicy food

Portal hypertension in patients with ascites caused by liver cancer can cause dilation of the lower esophagus, gastric fundus and anal veins. Ascites is often complicated by gastric mucosal erosion and ulcers. Eating spicy foods such as peppers will cause gastric mucosal congestion and increased peristalsis, which in turn can induce upper gastrointestinal bleeding, cause anal burning pain and increased frequency of bowel movements, aggravate hemorrhoids, and cause anal fissures. Therefore, patients with ascites caused by liver cancer must avoid eating spicy foods such as peppers to avoid worsening of the disease.
