2. What are the classifications of knee sprains?

2.1 Acute sprain

Mild: The pain of knee sprain is relieved, there is no swelling, and it will get better after resting for 3-7 days. It is usually a mild injury to the joint capsule. The symptoms disappear after a few days and the patient can resume normal activities.

Moderate: Knee sprain is accompanied by pain, but still can move, judged by the swelling after the injury:

Swelling within a few hours after the injury, usually associated with knee ligament damage or joint capsule tear;

Swelling occurs the day after the injury, which is often caused by damage to the meniscus or cartilage;

No swelling occurs after the injury, but swelling occurs when moving after the pain subsides;

There is slight swelling after the injury, which is generally a mild injury to the joint capsule.

The first three situations require medical attention as soon as possible; for the last one, just rest and you can resume normal activities after the symptoms disappear.

Severe: Severe pain occurs when the knee is sprained, or dislocation is felt immediately, and obvious swelling occurs within a few hours after the injury. You need to see a doctor immediately.

Some patients can still walk after injury, and even have a normal gait, but treatment should never be delayed because of this. Such injuries generally include (but are not limited to): tears of the medial patellofemoral ligament, anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments, meniscus tears, cartilage and bone fractures, tendon ruptures, etc.

2.2 Chronic sprain

In this case, the patient is often unable to run fast, turn sharply, stop suddenly, jump on one leg, etc., and the simple movements that they could complete before the injury are now impossible to complete. Ligament rupture, patellar dislocation or bone structure injury may be considered, and timely medical treatment is required.

3. How to prevent knee sprains

Warm-up before training must be sufficient, and do not go straight into high-intensity exercise. Injuries most often occur when you are tired or lack energy.

Pay attention to your running posture when running, and don't land on only one side of your foot.

Pay attention to using the thigh muscles to avoid direct impact on the knees from under the feet.

When symptoms of knee discomfort occur, reduce the amount and frequency of exercise appropriately, and avoid strenuous running, jumping, and weight-bearing exercises.

Usually pay attention to keep your knees warm, especially in summer don't be too cool.

Apply heat to your leg muscles after exercise.

When training with weights, especially when going downhill, avoid pounding your knees.
