Liver cancer does not occur without reason. In addition to being related to genetics, bad living and eating habits account for a large part. Once liver cancer is diagnosed, you need to actively cooperate with the doctor's treatment, adjust your diet, and assist in recovery.

How should liver cancer patients arrange their diet at different stages?

1. Before surgery

Most liver cancer patients are emaciated, so they need to supplement their nutrition intake before surgery and follow a high-protein, high-calorie and high-vitamin diet. Because hypoproteinemia is prone to occur after surgery, they need to eat more fish, lean meat, eggs, milk and beans containing high-quality protein before surgery. However, when liver failure occurs, the liver can no longer convert protein normally, so protein intake needs to be strictly limited. Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables can supplement the body with vitamins and trace elements. In addition, the patient's digestive ability is weakened, so avoid eating difficult-to-digest foods and adopt the principle of small and frequent meals.

2. After surgery

Liver cancer patients are very weak after surgery, and their gastrointestinal digestion capacity is reduced. They should not blindly supplement high-protein foods to avoid hepatic coma. Instead of supplementing nutrition, they will prolong hospitalization and increase physical discomfort. At first, they should eat liquid foods, such as rice soup, broth and vegetable juice, and then transition to semi-liquid foods and normal diet. Pay attention to dietary diversification and follow a low-fat, high-vitamin diet. If the patient has fluid exudation in the abdominal cavity after surgery, sodium intake should be limited, a low-salt or salt-free diet should be adopted, and diuretic foods such as kelp, beans and black fish should be eaten appropriately. Bleeding is easy after surgery, and vitamin C and vitamin K should be supplemented reasonably, such as oysters, kelp, shepherd's purse and jellyfish. Avoid eating hard, spicy and irritating foods, and do not eat foods containing too much plant fiber, otherwise it will cause rupture and bleeding of the esophageal or gastric veins, which will endanger life.

3. During radiotherapy

Liver cancer patients have a reduced appetite during radiotherapy, so they need to eat small amounts and multiple times to absorb the nutrients in the food. Choose high-quality protein foods that contain a full range of essential amino acids and do not increase the burden on the liver. Ensure adequate vitamin intake, eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and animal livers, and drink no less than 1500 ml of water a day, which can stimulate appetite and relieve gastrointestinal discomfort.

4. Recovery period

Most liver cancer patients will experience anxiety, depression, or self-abandonment during the recovery period, which will change their appetite, reduce food intake, and thus affect recovery. Therefore, it is necessary to have a balanced diet, arrange nutrition reasonably, replenish the body with the nutrients and water it needs, and maintain the body's balance. Eat less high-energy-density foods, such as low-fiber, sugary, and high-fat foods. Ensure adequate intake of beans and whole grains every day, such as oats, barley, brown rice, corn, and soybeans. All moldy and spoiled food must be thrown away, and stay away from overnight leftovers.

Kind tips

Liver cancer patients need to adjust their diet according to their own conditions, pay attention to a comprehensive and hygienic diet, do not eat half-cooked food, stay away from spicy and hard food. At the same time, they should also eat less pickled, smoked, and cooked meat products with preservatives. If the condition allows, participate in more outdoor activities, such as Tai Chi, square dancing, or walking, which can effectively increase appetite and improve nutritional status. In addition, go to the hospital for regular checkups and follow the nutritionist's advice to supplement nutrition.
