Could one embryo be twins?

I believe many people hope to have twins, but everyone knows that the chance of having twins is very small, and it is something that can only be encountered by chance. Maybe you have heard of many folk remedies to have twins, but these methods are basically unreliable, so don’t believe them easily. When pregnant women go to the hospital for a prenatal check-up, if they are twins, it can be checked through scientific instruments. So if the examination shows that there is only one embryo, is it possible to have twins?

Could one embryo be twins?

The gestational sac is the initial form of the mother's pregnancy, and the size of the gestational sac will vary depending on the pregnancy cycle. Can a gestational sac carry twins? Generally speaking, a gestational sac carries one life, but in clinical practice there are cases of identical twins, so it is possible that there are two babies in one gestational sac. The editor will introduce it to you below.

Can a gestational sac carry twins?

The gestational sac is the initial form of pregnancy. Its formation marks the beginning of embryonic development, indicating that a new life is beginning to be conceived.

1. The gestational sac is the initial form of pregnancy. It is a small embryo wrapped in the original placental tissue by the amniotic membrane and vascular network. The fetus had not yet formed at that time, but the fetal heartbeat was already there when the embryo bud appeared.

2. The gestational sac is very small at the beginning and then grows slowly. Generally speaking, after 5 weeks of pregnancy, a small gestational sac can be seen on B-ultrasound, which occupies less than 1/4 of the uterine cavity, or a fetal bud can be seen. If it is a normal intrauterine pregnancy, the gestational sac can be seen in the uterus through B-ultrasound around 40 days of pregnancy. However, due to individual differences in the time of conception, some pregnant women may not be able to see it until around 45 days.

3. Usually, when HCG reaches 1000U/L, vaginal ultrasound should be able to identify the intrauterine gestational sac. This is around the 4th or 5th day of the 5th week of pregnancy. When HCG reaches 6500U/L, abdominal ultrasound can identify the intrauterine gestational sac. Therefore, vaginal ultrasound will be more accurate. If the intrauterine gestational sac is not seen on the 49th day of pregnancy during a normal menstrual cycle, ectopic pregnancy should be suspected.

So, can a gestational sac carry twins? Clinically, there are monozygotic twins, which means one gestational sac, and dizygotic twins, which means two gestational sacs. If there are two gestational sacs and both have embryos and heart tube beating during the early pregnancy ultrasound, they are twins. There is a situation where one of the gestational sacs will slowly disappear during the development process, and this will result in a single baby. There are also many examples of identical twins, which cannot be detected until the babies are older. As long as you do regular prenatal checkups, you will know if you are having twins later.

Generally, the embryonic bud and fetal heartbeat can be seen on the 40th day. When the gestational sac reaches about 1 cm, the fetal heartbeat should be visible. On the 40th day of pregnancy, a membrane forms inside the fetus's nose, which is responsible for sensing odors. Her eyes were still tightly closed, but tissue had begun to form inside them.

Some mothers have not shown early pregnancy symptoms on the 40th day of pregnancy. It usually starts on the 42nd day, but they should also pay attention to nutritional balance, supplement more folic acid, and eat more light foods.

Some pregnant women have strong early pregnancy reactions, have no appetite, vomit until they feel weak all over, and become increasingly thin. This is hyperemesis gravidarum. Due to severe vomiting, a large amount of digestive juice is vomited out, and the pregnant woman cannot eat or drink water. The potassium intake is insufficient, which causes low blood potassium and hypokalemia, which manifests as weakness, mental depression, drowsiness, and in severe cases even endangers the life of the mother and fetus. Hyperemesis gravidarum is related to mental factors, so you must be strong and optimistic after pregnancy. Being a mother is a very happy thing, but also very difficult. It requires the courage to bear everything. Regarding early pregnancy reactions, we must realize that it is just a physiological phenomenon and treat it with a good attitude.

The main symptoms of pregnancy during the forty days include cessation of menstruation, breast tenderness, unexplained nausea and vomiting, increased frequency of urination, abnormal basal body temperature, fatigue in the early stages of pregnancy, and frequent wanting to sleep. Most women may experience dizziness, fatigue, drowsiness, increased salivation, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting after 6 weeks of pregnancy. Vomiting often occurs in the early morning or on an empty stomach. These are all symptoms of early pregnancy.
