What are head and neck tumors? We can think of head and neck tumors as follows: they are mainly caused by lesions in some important organs of the head and neck. For example, some benign and malignant tumors that occur in the long organs outside the skull base and skull, the base of the neck, that is, above the clavicle and before the cone, are collectively called head and neck tumors. Head and neck tumors include three major parts: neck tumors, otolaryngology tumors, and oral and maxillofacial tumors. Neck tumors belong to general surgery in comprehensive hospitals. The most common ones are thyroid tumors; common otolaryngology tumors include laryngeal cancer and paranasal sinus cancer; common oral and maxillofacial tumors include various oral cancers, such as tongue cancer, gum cancer, and cheek cancer. Therefore, the number of primary sites and pathological types of tumors occurring in the head and neck ranks first among all tumors in the body. At the same time, the important organs of the head and neck are relatively concentrated, the anatomical relationships are complex, and the treatment methods vary. What are the main disciplines in this area? The head and neck surgeons in the otolaryngology and head and neck surgery department are doing this, and the head and neck surgeons in the cancer hospital are also doing this. In addition, the oral and maxillofacial surgeons, that is, the oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the dental hospital and the oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the general hospital are also dealing with some diseases in this area. Some diseases in this area are mainly benign tumors and malignant tumors. We usually see the most malignant tumors in clinical practice, and when we talk about head and neck tumors, we are mostly referring to malignant tumors. Of course, it also includes some benign tumors. Therefore, the scope of this area is relatively large, and it involves multiple disciplines to deal with the diseases in this area. Then after the diagnosis is clear, sometimes the treatment also requires multidisciplinary treatment, including surgical treatment, oncology treatment, even radiotherapy, even isotope therapy, etc. It is a multidisciplinary treatment. Head and neck tumors are lesions that occur in some important organs of the head and neck, such as tumors outside the skull base and inside the skull. Malignant tumors are more common clinically and require multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment. |
