Can gastric cancer be treated with minimally invasive surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery is a very common surgical method nowadays, but not all gastric cancer patients are suitable for minimally invasive surgery. If the patient has early gastric cancer and the chance of peritoneal implantation is low, minimally invasive surgery may be recommended; if the patient is in the advanced stage, gastric cancer has penetrated the stomach wall, or there is invasion of surrounding organs, laparoscopic surgery will reduce the patient's survival rate, so minimally invasive surgery is not particularly recommended.

Generally speaking, gastric cancer requires surgical treatment. There are two types of surgical methods: traditional laparotomy and laparoscopic surgery. Traditional open surgery is usually accompanied by high morbidity and mortality, but it also has a great impact on the quality of life of patients after surgery. Minimally invasive surgical techniques can effectively reduce surgical trauma and accelerate postoperative recovery, and have been accepted by more and more doctors and patients.
1. Safety of minimally invasive surgery
Minimally invasive surgery is now very mature in the treatment of gastric cancer, but many people still have certain doubts and doubt that the tumor can be removed completely without any residue and that the survival can achieve the same results as open surgery. Laparoscopic surgery for gastric cancer began in the early 1990s. It was first performed by Japanese scholars. After years of practice, a large number of clinical studies at home and abroad have confirmed that the 5-year survival rate of patients with early gastric cancer who undergo laparoscopic surgery has reached more than 99%, and its safety, radicality, short-term and long-term effects are the same or better than those of laparotomy and open surgery.
2. Minimally invasive surgery is recognized in the world
The use of minimally invasive surgery to treat gastric cancer has now been highly recognized, and the guidelines for the treatment of gastric cancer by the Japanese Gastric Cancer Association (EGC) have been used as the "gold standard" in the treatment of early gastric cancer. The guidelines indicate that laparoscopic surgery is ideal for early gastric cancer with a small chance of lymph node metastasis. As early as the beginning of 2007, China also developed guidelines for laparoscopic surgery for gastric cancer surgery, and it is clear that the absolute indication for laparoscopic gastric cancer surgery is limited tumor infiltration deep muscle layer.
3. Benefits of minimally invasive surgery
Minimally invasive surgery has many advantages over traditional surgery, such as less bleeding, less damage, smaller postoperative scars, less pain, faster recovery of gastrointestinal function, smaller immune effects, fewer complications, no increase in recurrence rate, no need for surgery, and is safer and more reliable, especially for elderly diabetic patients. For gastric cancer patients who are suitable for laparoscopic surgery, experienced laparoscopic surgeons and hospitals should be selected to improve technology and equipment and ensure the quality of treatment.
