The normal value of NSE is the reference value used clinically to diagnose small cell lung cancer.

The reference range of normal nse value is: <12.5U/mL.

NSE (neuron-specific enolase) is an acidic protease unique to neurons and neuroendocrine cells. It is a specific marker for neuroendocrine tumors, such as neuroblastoma, medullary thyroid carcinoma, and small cell lung cancer (70% increase). It can be used for differential diagnosis, disease monitoring, efficacy evaluation, and recurrence prediction. The NSE level in patients with small cell lung cancer is significantly higher than that in non-small cell lung cancers such as lung adenocarcinoma, lung squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell lung cancer. It can be used for differential diagnosis and monitoring the therapeutic effect of small cell lung cancer after radiotherapy and chemotherapy. When the treatment is effective, the NSE concentration gradually decreases to normal levels, and serum NSE increases when recurrence occurs. Using neuron-specific enolase to monitor the recurrence of small cell lung cancer is 4 to 12 weeks earlier than clinical confirmation of recurrence.

There are a few things to note when checking NSE:

1. Do not eat greasy or high-protein food and avoid drinking large amounts of alcohol the day before blood collection. The alcohol content in the blood will directly affect the test results.

2. You need to be on an empty stomach before blood collection and do not eat after 8 pm the day before blood collection to avoid affecting the detection of indicators on the next day.

3. You should relax when having blood drawn to avoid blood vessel contraction due to fear, which will increase the difficulty of blood collection.
