It can be used for differential diagnosis, disease monitoring, efficacy evaluation, and recurrence prediction. The NSE level in patients with small cell lung cancer is significantly higher than that in non-small cell lung cancers such as lung adenocarcinoma, lung squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell lung cancer. It can be used for differential diagnosis and monitoring the therapeutic effect of small cell lung cancer after radiotherapy and chemotherapy. When the treatment is effective, the NSE concentration gradually decreases to normal levels, and serum NSE increases when recurrence occurs. Using neuron-specific enolase to monitor the recurrence of small cell lung cancer is 4 to 12 weeks earlier than clinical confirmation of recurrence.
