What is the effect of taking oxytocin

Oxytocin is a common drug for inducing labor in our lives. It is used for normal childbirth, abortion or induced labor. Although it is called oxytocin, it is used to open the female cervix quickly. In addition, oxytocin can stop bleeding during abortion. So what are the effects of oxytocin?

Oxytocin is a 9-peptide containing a disulfide bond, which is synthesized by neurons in the paraventricular nucleus of the supraoptic nucleus of the hypothalamus. Currently, the oxytocin used in clinical practice is mainly artificially synthesized or extracted from porcine and bovine posterior pituitary hormone. Oxytocin can be absorbed from the oral mucosa and selectively act on the uterine smooth muscle to promote uterine contraction. The effect is the same as oxytocin after intravenous infusion. It is contraindicated for women with pelvic stenosis, history of uterine surgery (including cesarean section), excessive labor pains, obstructed birth canal, placental abruption, or severe pregnancy poisoning. Oxytocin is a uterine contraction drug. Used for inducing labor, accelerating labor, and uterine bleeding caused by weak uterine contractions after delivery and abortion.

2. Pharmacological effects of oxytocin:

The main pharmacological actions of oxytocin are:

1. The specific oxytocin receptors on the cell membrane of human uterine smooth muscle couple the oxytocin receptors with G proteins, activate phospholipase C (PLC), promote the production of phosphoinositide, increase the concentration of Ga ions in the cytoplasm, and enhance the contraction of uterine smooth muscle.

2. Promote milk discharge: Oxytocin can contract the myoepithelial cells around the mammary alveoli and promote milk discharge.

3. Large doses of oxytocin can also temporarily relax vascular smooth muscle, causing a drop in blood pressure and having an antidiuretic effect.

Precautions for using oxytocin after childbirth

1. Oxytocin can only be used when it is confirmed that there are no multiple births and there are no fetuses in the uterus.

2. If oxytocin is used during labor, it should be maintained within 2 hours after delivery to avoid uterine relaxation bleeding.

For uterine atony, the total amount of oxytocin should not exceed 60U. If the bleeding does not stop, the cause of the bleeding should be analyzed again.

If oxytocin is injected directly into the vein without dilution, there is a risk of causing coronary artery constriction and cardiac arrest.
