Will onychomycosis cause swollen feet?

Onychomycosis usually occurs on our hands, and some people may have onychomycosis on their toes. In addition, onychomycosis is highly contagious, which makes our nails look dull, and it is likely to cause the nails to fall off when they are removed. Therefore, the root cause must be completely eliminated during treatment. So, will onychomycosis cause swelling of the feet?

Onychomycosis, commonly known as "onychomycosis". The disease usually starts with 1-2 nails (toenails), but in severe cases all nails (toenails) may be affected. The diseased deck loses its luster, and over time the deck becomes thicker and deformed, becoming grayish white or dirty yellow. The nail plate becomes brittle and breaks off, sometimes separating from the nail bed. In the past, diseased nails had to be removed, with methods such as surgical removal; after the diseased nail was removed, iodine was used to remove the fungus until a new nail grew out. Now, with the advent of a variety of new drugs, oral medications for the treatment of onychomycosis have also achieved good results. Commonly used drugs include: Sporanox, Lamisil, Terbinafine, etc.

The traditional treatment method for onychomycosis is mainly external treatment. One treatment option is to surgically remove the nail fungus. As the saying goes, the fingers are connected to the heart. Needless to say, the pain of nail removal is self-explanatory. Moreover, the nail bed exposed after nail removal is bloody and it is difficult to apply antifungal drugs. The fungus cannot be eliminated in time, and the new nail plate can easily be infected with fungi again, causing recurrence of onychomycosis. Another method is to use topical antifungal drugs for treatment. Apply 5% iodine tincture locally and use antifungal ointments such as Daktarin cream. This treatment method is simple and easy, but because the nail grows very slowly, in order to ensure that the new nail plate is not infected by fungi, it is necessary to apply the medicine continuously for 6 to 9 months, which is troublesome and difficult to persist. Moreover, since the nail plate is a very tough and dense layer of keratin, it is difficult for topical medications to penetrate and completely kill the fungi in and under the nail plate, and the clinical effect is not ideal.

The treatment of onychomycosis mainly uses antifungal drugs such as itraconazole, terbinafine, etc. For local medication, after softening or removing the diseased nail, antifungal ointment or cream can be applied topically. Glacial acetic acid, iodine tincture, etc. can also be applied topically. The diseased nail should be removed continuously until the normal nail grows out. Generally, it should be persisted for more than half a year. In severe cases, surgical treatment can be considered.
